| Puppy has Giardia... Got results back from the lab that Yuna has giardia. She's on medication - ones a white powder another med is a blue tablet... receptionist told me that it's transferable to humans and I am kind of freaking out. She did eliminate in a lot of places in the house and I clean her bum everytime so I am kind of worried about getting it. Yuna will be okay, I hope. They said it was fairly common with puppies and that she probably got it from her mother. I got yogurt for her to mix the powder in, but she seems to be a bit more crazy and aggressive. She's growling excessively and biting and panting a lot. Her temperment is just getting worst. This prob has nothing to do with her giardia, but still! Wish someone told me that I should check the stool of a new puppy so I could have dealt with it early on. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear about your puppy. In December I fostered a puppy mill rescue and it was my only time fostering and the puppy had giardia. She tested negative when I brought her home but 5 days later tested positive. I had let her be with my 3 girls but thankfully neither they or my family came down with it. It cleared up pretty quickly with the medicine. Sounds like typical puppy behavior.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Sorry to hear about your pups' Giardia, but it is fairly common. Like Patti posted, it clears up with meds quickly, especially if caught early. It can be difficult to diagnose because it doesn't always show up in a fecal sample. I wouldn't worry excessively about anyone in your house getting it. I've fostered several dogs that have had Giardia (it's very common in puppymill dogs) and have yet to have anyone, dog or human catch it from one of the fosters. I always clean up the poo immediately and use a bleach/water solution.....but then I've got stained concrete floors and bleach doesn't hurt that....with carpet (if that's what you have) you might have to look for a different disinfectant. You might want to consider an obedience class for your pup....we had a great trainer at a local Petsmart class.

| Although giardia can be transmitted to humans, it is not easy to catch. Make sure to clean eveyrthing she comes in contact with (toys, floors, etc) with a 10% bleach solution. Wash all bedding and blankets. Using disposable wipes after she goes, flushing them and then washing your hands is a very good practice. Do not keep disposable puppy pads after she has a BM - immediately get rid of them. Sometimes it can take several weeks of treatment before you finally ger rid of giardia. If she is panting without exertion, this is usually a sign of pain. Could be she is having a reaction to the meds. Starting her on a daily probiotic will help keep her gut healthy as well. Good luck!!!!
