| Every dog is different. That is the problem. I have an 80lb rescue 'mutt' that gets pancreatitis at the drop of a hat. Can't give him anything, literally. Made for dog only, and people non meats, you know occasional bread products, rolls etc.. or its bloody stools, vomitting and a huge vet bill. I have a 10lb maltipoo who is a veritable goat. Bacon, ham, bones, tin cans..seriously, he can eat anything and everything and nothing bothers him. The 2 little yorkies? I love them too much to use them as guinea pigs... I figure, why take a chance? Their breed has a tendency towards pancreatitis. As small as they are a pancreatitis bout would dehydrate them dangerously and the vet bill would be expensive and they would be miserable. Sooooo, no pork products, ever. Only chicken, beef, liver and then never seasoned. and never fried in any grease products.

| The leanest cuts of beef are the loin cuts -- sirloin, tenderloin (filet mignon), and New York strip. The leanest cut of pork is tenderloin --- it is just as lean as skinless chicken breast, and that is really low! I would think that tenderloin would be fine, even for a dog that must have a very low fat diet. Also, if you read labels, you will see that Canadian Bacon is a cut of ham that is relatively low in fat. It would be OK as a treat, but only in small amounts because it is so high in sodium.

| Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | My own personal feelings are pork is hard to digest so I don't ever give mine any - I know some do but I tend to stay with lean chicken and nothing else. I found even steak will cause problems with my 2 so it's dry food with homecooked chicken - that's all they get - maybe an occasional scrambled egg and a tiny tiny TINY bite of steak cause of the sad faces they're so good at but I always regret it.....I think it depends on the dog and their stamina - what some can eat with no problems - others can't. But pork has always been on my list of a no no..... I don't know if there's data to back up what I just said about pork but I'd rather not take a chance and again - that's just my personal feelings...it can be so hard not to share edited to add - sometimes just a lick of something makes them happy so that's the way I handle depriving them of certain foods.....

| Can Dogs Be Fed Pork? | Expert Pet Advice | PetPeoplesPlace.com Pork in itself is as harmless to dogs as chicken, beef or any other meat. However, there is a slight risk of your dog being infected with trichinosis by eating pork. Trichinosis, also known as trichinellosis, is a worldwide, food borne disease caused by an intestinal roundworm, uncommon in the United States. Both humans and pets who eat raw or undercooked meat of infected animals can develop the disease. Undercooked or raw meat of infected animals contains the roundworm. The disease can lead to muscle soreness and pain together with swelling of the upper eyelids in mild cases but can lead to more severe symptoms. If you would like to feed pork but want to take all necessary precautions, it is recommended that the pork be frozen for 3 weeks to kill the parasite. The most important precaution is to make sure that all fresh pork and pork products are properly cooked. Other raw and undercooked meat should also be avoided, especially meat from wild animals. It was stated on a number of other websites to never give the cooked bones as they will splinter just like cooked chicken bones...

Wow. I agree with you 100% about everything you said. I refuse to give my dog steak too because their arteries are so small and the last thing I want is for them to get clogged. I do the steamed chicken too but with my girl's puppy kibble. My girl mainly just goes for the chicken (at least she did in the beginning). I'm a bit worried though because I don't want her just eating steamed chicken. That alone doesn't seem to be nutritionally balanced IMO. Don't you agree? I've tried steamed veggies but she won't touch them (everything from carrots to green beans). She doesn't like sweet potatoes either. So, I may just give up with the homecooking. She'll have a bit of yogurt as a treat though. Most of the time I have to hand feed her the kibble so she eats it. She's not really that big on it. I'm thinking of trying a different kibble and have ordered some trial sizes of Artemis, Royal Canine and Merrick which I can use with the chicken. Hopefully she'll eat both the kibble and chicken or I'm also thinking of trying pre-made raw - Primal. Heard good things about it and I think it may be the healthiest in comparison to the steamed chicken and kibble. I'm not sure if the chicken is whats causing her to ignore her kibble and just don't want her to eat steamed chicken only. This dog food really is trial and error!!

i am feeding my dogs the honest kitchen (preference) right now. it's a human grade dog food mix, all you have to do is rehydrate the mix and add your choice of meat. my dogs love it so far. (and my milu is VERY picky eater!)

| Honestly, I give Jackson bits of nearly everything I eat, especially when it comes to meats. If I'm eating chicken, he gets some pieces of chicken, if I'm eating pork, he'll get pieces of pork, etc. Although I rarely eat pork, it's not my favorite. I eat Fruit Loops a lot for breakfast and I always give him 1 or 2 Fruit Loops when I eat them. When training a new trick, sometimes I will use shredded turkey from the deli. But he's at a very healthy weight, and never has any stomach issues with it, as I just give him a little bit of everything and small portions. He ate a few of my noodles from my spaghetti tonight. It's a bad habit because he's a beggar so in that sense, I wouldn't recommend it, but it's never caused us any health issues.

| Yes they can. Ham, bacon, and sausage would totally be out of the question for me. Pancreatitis is too serious to chance something like that. If you mean pork loin, then yes. OF course all dogs are different and any food has the potential to trigger reactions. But, it is not on the no list. Actually, we suspect that some lean roast beef triggered one case of pancreatitis for Ellie, so you just never know... After that experience, giving dogs any kind of beef (including hamburger) makes me nervous.

| She has had chicken and turkey (both very lean), roast beef, hamburger, egg, and fish. At the moment, the only thing she can have is fish.

Thanks! I'll definitely have to try the blender solution! What a good idea. The honest kitchen sounds great too. I'll have to look into it also!!
