can yorkies have pork?
 
i am wondering if i can feed my dogs cooked pork. if yes, how do i cook it properly? can i steam it?

From my understanding, pork is not one of the better foods for dogs. I heard it attracts worms and dogs usually get really bad (days of) vomiting and diarrhea and it really messes with their gastric tracts..

i think dogs cannot eat pork raw, but i am wondering if it is ok if it is cooked?

my husband will share just about anything with the dogs..seriously..he was cracking crab legs and sharing them with my gidget the other day who is FEEDING BABIES..ugh men..lol and i raised a fit but she loved it..on the pork he gives the whatever ham bacon ribs but i make sure he stops after a few bites because of the salt content

i wouldn't risk it as high in fat and this breed is prone to pancreatitis

You don't often see it in dog food, and I think that's because of the high fat content. I think there are better choices of protein. I do know some raw feeder give pork ribs.

:thumbup: Pork and pork products like bacon, sausage, ham, etc. are known to trigger pancreatitis.

Then I have to warn my husband not to give any cold cuts to Samy... he gives ham in super small amounts I think, but still... no more ham :)

No bologna either. :)

It doesn't take much to trigger a pancreatitis attack in dogs who are sensitive. A co-worker's father gave her Yorkie one tiny piece of ham during brunch and Sugar ended up at the ER vet with a bill of nearly $2,000.

omg! just a little tiny piece of ham!?!?!?

so they shouldn't even have pork not even just for occasional treat? i didn't know pork was that much higher in fat than chicken and beef...:eek:

I think it really depends on the cut. A lean piece of pork has less fat than many cuts of beef. It also depends on how it's prepared.

so far i have been giving them chicken, beef, and fish.

so are there parts of chicken or beef that's higher in fat that i shouldn't give to the dogs? i buy them chicken breast but i was wondering if they can also eat the drumsticks. and i just buy whatever cubed beef, not really sure which one i should get. :confused:

I can understand bacon and sausage, but I don't see why lean pork would hurt them. Probably not one of the items used in dog food because it is more expensive than chicken.

Anything lean and off the bone. dark meat of chicken is ok but not the skin or the bones or the fat.
