| Water Issue Wookie is about 80% good with his potty training. He's 6 months. He hasn't had an accident (that we know about) in a few months. He is a really bad water gulper. Not only would he drink it so fast that he'd throw up or burp, but I can't seem to keep enough water in the bowl. Every time I'd fill it up he'd sit there and drink it all. He'd never stop drinking until I just stopped filling it. He's been cleared by the vet for any urinary issues. I switched over to giving him ice cubes, but now I feel he isn't getting enough water. Now that he's pretty reliant with his potty training, I want to start using water in a bowl again. Any suggestions to prevent him from gulping or from incessantly drinking gallons of water?

| I think they actually sell bowls specifically for this issue, or maybe it's just for food gulpers? But it's basically got things in the middle of it the bowl to keep them from eating/drinking so fast, it just slows them down. Like this; PETCO Slow Feeder Dog Bowl in Sapphire at PETCO

| This isn't normal... What testing did the vet do? How much does he weigh and how many ounces of water does he drink daily when you put the bowl down? Does he drink more than a cup of water a day?

| Tested for urinary traction infection and kidney issues. I'm not sure how much in ounces. But he has a little ceramic bowl that I will test out right now....bowl holds 1.16 ounces of water. Bowl number one he just drank the whole thing in less than a minute. Bowl number two is taking him a bit longer, but it's all gone. Bowl number 3 he took a few swigs from and then stopped because his tummy was all bloated. He's still burping.

| 1.16? Do you mean 16? The average (varies between dogs) is one ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. This is just a rough estimate and would apply to dogs eating dry food. It sounds like he is drinking much more than that and I'd be very concerned at this point. Please ask the vet if diabetes insipidus has been ruled out. Diabetes Insipidus

| Oops I mean to say cups. It holds 1.16 cups of water. He has been burping ever since and he just threw up everything in his stomach. Lovely. I'm taking him to the vet this weekend because of his extreme breath issues, I will ask her. He doesn't have excessive urination and there's no disorientation or lack of coordination. He hasn't gone near the water since, so we'll see how it goes. If I put the water down when he's not around maybe he'll be less inclined to sit there and drink it up. Or seeing as 1.16 cups of water is a lot, maybe just letting him drink it all and not refilling it for a while may be the answer.

I agree, this isn't normal, something is wrong here. Also, aqueous18, what do you mean extreme breath issues? Is he teething? Or do you mean "sweet" breath (again, thinking diabetes here)?

| Just to clarify, I am wondering about diabetes insipidus, not regular diabetes...

Nice stat. I was curious about how much water was considered appropriate given body weight and for some reason was having trouble finding out this information! I was just wondering what kind of food you are using aqeuous18? Maybe that has something to do with it, but with the amount of H20 intake it may be a bigger health problem (diabetes or cushings?), and also since a UTI was ruled out. Hmm. Hopefully everything is okay with Wookie (adorable name!) and it's nothing serious. Keep us updated! | |

| He got the okay from the vet. She said the water drinking is most likely a compulsive behavior and not to give him anymore after he drinks the first bowl. Since that day I have been interrupting his water drinking. She ruled out diabetes. Wookie has the worst breath imaginable. It's so bad he stinks the whole room up and I brush his teeth everyday. He is being fed Blue Buffalo. The vet says it is most likely because of his two retained canine teeth. She was trying to wait to see if his testicles would descend, but she's confident they won't. We're going to pull the teeth when he has his surgery. I've never had so many health issues with a puppy before!

I understand that diabetes mellitus was ruled out. But you haven't ruled out DIABETES INSIPIDUS -- and -- you are now restricting water. Just so you know, water restriction in a dog who *does* have DI can result in severe hyperosmolality, coma, and death.
