My girl Goldie is 15 months old. I believe she may be in heat because she's swollen. I'm not asking about breeding, because I don't want to breed her. I got both my girls in December and have put them through quite a bit with the vet, so I was just trying to give them a little time before I have them spayed. So share your wealth of info with me on this subject please.
I might add that when I first got my girls I had in mind that I would one day breed them and increase our babies. My husband and I joked that one day we would have a house full of yorkies to love. But after reading and learning, I've decided that there is no way I would risk losing either one of them. I've had dogs all my life, and yet none have compared to these girls!

After reading my post, I thought maybe I should be a little more clear on my questions. How do I know for sure if she is in heat if I don't see any signs of blood, and that this is not some other sort of illness? Should she see the vet to make sure she is ok? When should spaying be done?

I would call the vet, usually they will lick that area a lot, nest things, and make sure you don't take her anywhere with male dogs. They usually tell you to spay/neuter your pets at 6 months of age, I would call your vet.

It sounds like she could be in heat. They don't show blood the whole time. There is a thread on here with the timelines of the heat cycle. If you think it could possibly be anything else I would at least call the vet to make sure, better safe then sorry.

Thanks Dara. She is licking that area quite a bit. I just picked her up and looked at her again and I do see a little blood now. I didn't get her until she was 13 mos. old. When I got my girls they were quite a bit underweight and I wanted to make sure they were healthy enough to go through the procedure. Then they both got sick a few weeks later with tonsillitis because of their baby teeth and then had to have surgery to remove their baby teeth. All of this in just a couple months. They are just now starting to really look and act really healthy. They only go outside with me and my husband and they are always on a leash and harness. (We have a big house so they have plenty of room to run and play!) So, I really don't worry about other dogs getting to them. However I did read something on here about an infection that they can get in the uterus from not being spayed and that does worry me. I am going to call the vet today.

I've actually been reading all morning in hopes of finding something about the heat cycle. There's just so much info, I guess I just haven't found it yet, but I will keep looking.
The vet says he's pretty sure that's all it is. Of course, he knows that I'm a worrier and I tend to get concerned when something new happens, lol. I'm lucky to have an outstanding vet group that love when you call and ask questions. They say they worry about the pets who's owners don't get concerned.

I know I love my vet, They always take the time to amswer questions and they don't make me feel like I am being a pain

Total cycle is 21 days.

Week one - is known as coming in - turning pink and swelling - 7 days
week two - is known as showing color....when bleeding begins - 7 days
week three - is know as going out - but when very susceptable to the male. When a female can concieve. Usually on day 10 from the onset of showing color.....when she breeds with the male is not when she concieves....it's usually when she ovulates. from day 10 to day 16.....

It's best to keep your girl away from any intact male for approximately 4 weeks. For your sanity, the safety of your girl and of course the sanity of the male.
