Try mixing both dog food and table food. I bake 1 thin sliced chicken breastfeeding and shred it. Then I mix it with grain free Earth born Holistic. If it's been in the fridge, I pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to bring to room temp and I usually don't have a problem with him eating.

Love thanks... here is what has been working for me

Thanks to all who suggested cooking chicken breast... I feel ok feeding it since so many of you feed it to your yorkies... Since I have an older 'adopted' yorkie, I am happy to get her to eat anything other then the junk food Cesars she was use to. I am concerned about her getting a balanced nutritional diet so I get her to eat Wellness Dry food for toy breeds in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon. How do I do this? Some of you suggested playing and hand feeding... It works. It gets her metabolism going... I know this is going to sound strange to some, but I play "Joyful Joyful Lord We Adore Thee" upbeat version EVERY morning and she eats and plays while the song is on. [geez... I know some of you think I am crazy]. Then on some nights, I will give her 1/2 a baked chicken breast cut up. I use no seasoning on the chicken breast. I read salt and spices are bad for them. She won't eat WET food from Lotus or other manufacturers. The wet food smells wretched. I figure the chicken is people food and fit for human consumption so it is healthier for her then the wet food. Once in a while I give her a scrambled or hard boiled egg chopped up. ANYONE KNOW WHAT VEGGIES ARE GOOD FOR YORKIES?

I give my two green beans with their kibble but not enough to upset the nutritional balance that their dog food provides. When feeding human food you need to provide the same balance that a dog's diet requires and too many people assume a balanced human diet is a balanced dog diet. Dogs require way more calcium than humans and in fact a small yorkie needs as much as an adult human female. So when home feeding your really need to follow recipes provided by canine nutritionists. Adding a tablespoon of boiled chicken breast won't ruin their diet, and even better you can use that tablespoon broken up into tiny pieces and use it for training.

Love Thanks. Where would I find a nutritionally balanced simple homemade recipe

Hi, thanks... I am very concerned about my Yorkie getting the nutrition she needs... What dry kibble do you use that has a good nutritional balance AND how much do you feed? Do you know where I would find a good supplement or a homemade simple recipe that is nutritionally balanced? thanks again!!

My 3 Yorkies over the years have all loved it when I soak their kibble(whatever brand I've been using on whatever dog I had at the time) until soft, microwave it so that part of it is hard but the center is still soft-ish and cool it to warm, then feed it to them. I put a microwave out on the utility porch just so I could do that as it stinks up the house something awful if you cook it in the regular kitchen microwave. Still, I have baked treats made from softened, beaten kibble paste or dough in the regular oven and had to air out the house afterward but the dogs all ate them up.

Joey was a very fussy Yorkie and I tempted him with chicken sprinkled on his kibble, until he became even fussier. I finally found a kibble he loved with no special toppings and several years later he still loves it. It's Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers. It's made especially for fussy eaters and it works for us. You have to find the right amount of food to feed, the vet told me the most Joey should weigh for his size, which is about 5 pounds 10 ounces and I try to feed him enough to keep him around 5 1/2 pounds.

If you wish to do home cooking and your dog has no special medical problems, I've heard that the supplement "Balance It" is very useful in creating a balanced diet using human foods, for example, a boiled meat, a starch, like rice, corn, pasta, and a vegetable like green beans. You add the Balance It in the prescribed amount, and it's suppose to provide the necessary nutrients. Their website helps you create your own recipes based on your dogs likes, but you must remember that Yorkies are prone to pancreatitis and high fat meats that larger breeds can sometimes handle can send the Yorkie to the emergency room. So be careful on which meats you use. https://secure.balanceit.com/

Here's the receipe it gave me when I listed some of Joey's favorite foods.

CHICKEN & BROWN RICE WITH BROCCOLI FOR DOGS
generated by guest at BalanceIT.com

The following homemade recipe was specially created for Joey, a 8 yr old neutered male dog. This recipe has been formulated for a healthy pet. Joey currently weighs 5.5 lb with a body condition score of 5/9. Based on his weight, his calculated energy requirement is around 194.54 Calories daily. The following recipe provides 212 Calories, enough for 1 day.

JOEY'S HOMEMADE FOOD RECIPE

Ingredients Grams Amount
(1) Broccoli, cooked, boiled, drained, without salt 39.0 g 1/4 of a cup, chopped
(2) Chicken, broilers or fryers, breast, meat only, cooked, roasted 35.0 g 1/4 of a cup, chopped or diced
(3) Oil, canola 2.2 g 1/2 of a tsp
(4) Rice, brown, long-grain, cooked 109.7 g 9/16 of a cup

PLUS
1 3/8 teaspoons (2.75 gram) of Balance IT® Canine once a day

1 bottle of Balance IT® Canine will last about 218 days

Per Above Recipe: 212 Calories; 28% protein calories (58 Calories); 20% fat calories (42 Calories); 53% carbohydrate calories (112 Calories); 73.1% moisture. Notes: These percentages do not correspond to the percentages listed on commercially made food.

Preparation Instructions:
Bake the chicken in the oven and cook the brown rice per package instructions without any added salt. Boil or steam the broccoli in water without any added salt. Once cooked, measure out the chicken, brown rice, and broccoli to the amounts above. Cut the chicken into small pieces. Place the brown rice in a serving bowl and add the broccoli, oil, and the necessary supplement. Mix well. Place the cut chicken onto the rice and broccoli and serve.*

*If your dog chooses to eat only the chicken when served on top of the brown rice and broccoli, please mix all the ingredients together to ensure that all essential nutrients are eaten.
The recipe must be followed exactly. Any alteration in amount or substitution of ingredients may cause adverse health consequences.

Substitutions:
Ingredients should not be substituted. Ingredients that may seem similar can vary greatly in the amounts and types of nutrients they provide. This is especially true of any vegetable oils used as they have very specific fatty acid profiles and changing from, say, corn oil to olive oil can make the diet potentially deficient in linoleic acid, while using walnut oil instead of corn oil would be okay. Please make additional recipes using the desired ingredient(s) or purchase and request a custom recipe setting if none exists with the desired ingredient(s).

Measuring Ingredients:
The fastest and most accurate way to measure the major ingredients in the recipe is to use a gram scale. These scales can be inexpensively purchased at office supply stores as well as at stores that sell kitchen supplies.

If a gram scale is not available, the common measure can be used. Some helpful common measure conversions: 1/16 cup = 1 tbsp, 1 tbsp = 3 tsp, 1 oz = 28.35 grams.

Multiple Pets:
Recipes are created for specific pets so it is usually best to have recipes created for each individual pet in a household. If you have other pets, please make a specific recipe(s) for them.

Storage:
Prepared food can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 weeks. Do not reheat any food that already contains vitamin containing supplement(s) as heating vitamins can degrade them.

Purchasing Supplements:
Please use only the supplement type(s) that are called for in the above recipe. Substitutions should not be made, and could potentially lead to harmful effects or an improperly balanced recipe. Needed Balance IT® products can be purchased from BalanceIT.com or from veterinary clinics.

Needed human supplements can be purchased at most drugstores, some supermarkets, and online.

Monitoring:
Please monitor Joey's weight and make sure he achieves/maintains a healthy weight. If he unintentionally begins to gain or lose weight, please contact his veterinarian.

Joey should have regular visits with a veterinarian to check that his homemade diet is meeting his needs.

This diet was created using the patent pending system, Balance IT® available at balanceit.com
