| Strangers giving treats? I love to take Muffin to the park for exercise and for the social aspect. Lately people have been trying to give her food without asking. Thankfully Muffin does not eat it. I was wondering if anyone on here has this problem and how they handle it! |

| Strangers never give my dogs treats; they just want to give them a pat on the head. I am glad that Muffin does not eat the treats, because we cannot trust every stranger we meet. Maybe you can tell the strangers that Muffin is on a strict diet. |

| I wouldn't want Sugar to eat anything from strangers, I would tell them Sugar is "on diet", and say thank you for offering foods!

| Thankfully, Lacey will not eat anything someone else gives her. Every time we go into the pet stores and the bank someone will offer her a treat. The same goes for people tyring to give Lacey kisses (in the mouth). I really do not appreciate that!! I undersand that people are just being kind, but they need to realize that a dog is just like your child. |

| Oh no-no-huh-uh..... I would not be happy. I only give certain treats to Harley and would think it rude for people to 'assume' its ok. Fortunately, I've never encountered this before. But, like "luvmylacy" said, i think of her as my child and would never allow my kid to take anything from a stranger.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Mine won't eat treats from someone else but if they offer them, I just say she has severe allergies (Cali does) and is in a strict diet. The people are just trying to be nice so I wouldn't want to make them feel bad.

| I don't have to worry about that. Buddy will not take anything from anyone outside the home. Even when we go to the pet store, the girls are always ready to give him a treat at the checkout and he turns his head. He does this on his own and always has. I think the person offering the treat should check with the owner first. You would if the baby was a human one and I think that rule should apply to furbabies as well. |

Also, since he has a somewhat fear of strangers (petting him specifically) I often times will ask if someone will give him a treat and then he becomes more comfortable with the person. But that's me asking. I don't think I would like a stranger just handing him something without asking.

| No one really has tried to give them a treat, other than being asked at the drive thru at the bank. But my 2 don't like crunchy treats anyhow. when I do give it to them (at the bank), they just bury the heck out of it in their carset. lol but I would not like it if someone didn't ask first.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Someone tried to give Thor a sip from their Coke can once! I was pissed. Thor gets a lot of attention, and I always thank people if they ask before they pet him or whatever, especially if it's kids. Got to encourage those good manners. What does really annoy me is if I'm clearly practicing a Sit/Stay with Thor, say, at an intersection, and people come by and try to distract him. We are working here! One a**hole deliberately tried to startle/scare him. And of course everyone laughed at the little dog getting scared. I guess ultimately when Thor gets better at impulse control, those annoying people will be good challenges for him, and he'll just snub them. Last edited by QuickSilver; 02-18-2010 at 10:44 AM. |

| I would have gone off !! there is no reason to give another persons dog a treat without asking. I carry hard bones around in my coat pockets and purse and when i see a friendly dog i ask if i can pet it and give it a treat most of the time i get sure but sometimes i get answers like "make him sit first" or "no he snaps around food" it is just plain rude to give another persons dog a treat with out asking Gatsby dose not eat treats he hates them the only thing he will eat is snausages and i only give them to him once in a blue moon we use kibble for training

| Wow, I'm amazed that someone wouldn't ask before giving a dog a treat/food! I would be pissed too!!! I'm actually pissed for you, lol. I don't like people petting my dogs without asking, much less feeding them. Yikes! I can't believe the lack of manners some people have. No telling what kinda stale biscuit they're giving your dog, either. It's actually a little scary...

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm amazed at how many of your dogs refuse the food, that's so cool, I know that they train guard dogs this, but didn't know that it was something some dogs knew on their own. Nobody ever offers Joey food, I guess it's because he's barking at them. Seriously, I think you should say something to the people, so that they will learn a lesson, like we are trying to teach him not to accept food from strangers.

| Every time I've been asked if it was ok to give Uni a treat. During her first year we were soooooo strict with her diet, no treats, no people food at all! We go to the Chick-fil-a drive thru all the time and they have dog biscuits there and they always offer. (They say "does your dog want a biscuit?" and bf thought they meant an actual people biscuit! And he was like "why'd you say no???!") Well she doesn't like those. If we go to a high-end dog boutique, they always ask first, and Uni's smart, she takes the good stuff, not the cheap stuff! LOL But no, we have never had a stranger NOT ask and try to give something. Once she did get offered a hotdog at the Weinerschitzel drivethru. I was so horrified at the thought of giving her a hotdog that I didn't think that I could have ate it myself! Ok yea I know I eat a lot of drive thru.
