| Reaction to Shot Maddie had her 2nd set of shots this morning and after we got home, she had a reaction. She was crying and rubbing her face in her blanket. I called the vet back and she told me to bring her in. They gave her Benadryl and had me wait with her so she could check her again. She was fine after that. I brought her home and she slept for a little while. She is now acting the same again. She is miserable and it is killing me to see her like this. Her little mouth is slightly swollen also and she is just crying and looking at me. She can't be still either. She tries to lay down and rest but can't be still. I've tried the vet's emergency number but have not got a call back yet. Is it safe to give her children's Benadryl? Just a small dose? |

| yup- it is safe. how much does she weigh? Layla is 6 lbs and i give her 1/4 of an adult regular strength(25 mg) pill. I just hide it in a treat. it is harder to get the liquid in them but if you go to the pharmacy you can get an eye dropper and she can have 1-2mg per pound Last edited by marcerella02; 12-12-2009 at 11:34 AM. |

| She just weighs 1.5 pounds. How much should I give her? She has actually fallen asleep now so I am going to wait until she wakes up to give her a dose. I don't want to disturb her since she is finally resting. Last edited by LeahDee; 12-12-2009 at 11:35 AM. |

| if you are giving the children's liquid (which i would because you won't be able to break up the tablet small enough!)- and make sure it is CHILDREN"S the adults has too much alcohol- I would give her 1-2 mg- but you need something to meausure it with. The syringes at the pharmacy usually have mg measurements on the side. and if you don't use a syringe- i'm not sure how you will get it in her Layla HATES the taste of it! |

| If she is still miserable and the swelling has continued, I would wake her up, check her gums, and talk to the vet. Swlling on the outside could mean swelling on the inside...throat closure.

| I hope she gets better. I am surprised that the vet did not give her a shot of benedryl before she got her other shots. My vet always recommends it because of her size and she is 5 lbs.

| Max got his shots this week as well. I didn't have him last year, so this was the first time I've taken him for shots. I was concerned about a reaction, so the vet gave him Benadryl prior to him getting his shots. I didn't want to take any chances. Next time, I think I'll give it to him myself. It was $18 extra for the Benadryl

| Thanks for all the advice. I've given her Benadryl and it calmed her down and she slept. After a while she started whining and stuff again. I gave her another dose. I am not sure if I'm giving her enough. I have a syringe but no measurements on the side. I didn't give her a whole lot and it was children's liquid. She didn't like it at all, but seems to be much better after taking it. She is now asleep and it looks as if the swelling has gone down. It was just her upper lips by her nose and was not swelled up huge, just enough to be noticeable. The vet did say that from now on we would give her Benadryl before her shots and watch her closely. She said it was more dangerous for her not to have shots then having the reaction with them. Last edited by LeahDee; 12-12-2009 at 02:17 PM. |

| I hope she is ok. If it were me, I wouldn't be getting shots for her again. Next time she could have a worse reaction.... |

Oh wanted to add, she may have swelling at the injection site in a few weeks too. Don't freak out when you find a big watery lump on her shoulder. Just massage it daily and slowly it will go away.

| She seems to be mostly back to her funny, playful little self today, but sometimes she will stop and whine a little and bite around her backside...around her leg and under it. I don't know why? She never did that until after the shot. She only got one shot and also some wormer. I am going to call the vet in the morning and tell them how she acts and see what they say. It isn't all the time but she has done it on & off all day. She is scheduled for her next shot on January 2nd. She will be 10 weeks old on that day. Any suggestions about what she could be biting her leg for? My mother-in-law thinks they may have hit a nerve when they gave her the shot. Is this a possibility? |
