| Post choking episode concerns My 10-month old boy got a small piece of ficus leaf stuck in his throat tonight (I wrestled away most of the leaf before he could swallow it). He gagged like he does when he gets grass stuck in his throat, but I panicked when the gagging grew very strong. I stuck my finger all the way to the back of his tongue (because I thought that I could feel the leaf piece) and inadvertently caused him to throw up his dinner -- a good size mass of junk. He appears to be breathing normally and he has swallowed water, yogurt, peas, bits of lamb roll, and a few pieces of kibble after the episode. He was also eager to run around and play. Could I have injured his throat with my finger? My baby weighs almost 8 pounds, but I still worry about his delicate throat. |

| Choking emergencies are so scary. It sounds like the crisis has been averted. Just be sure your baby isn't coughing up anything that looks like blood. He wouldn't be eating if his throat hurt. You did good. |

| The first rule of choking is that if they are able to breath they will cough it up and to leave them alone. There really was no need to stick your finger into his throat. I'm glad that he is fine and I'm sure that you did not hurt him.

| Wow I am so glad your baby is ok! I know what that was like, I had such a scare when Peanut was about 5 months!! Dh and I were just hanging out at home, I gave Peanut this treat.. Kinda like a little "golden grahmn" looking treat.. Well Peanut bit the body and chewed and swallowed it...I was on the couch with Dh and I looked down at Peanut and he was like rubbing his eyes with his paw.. I knew something was wrong. I grabbed Pnut and put him on the counter top we both realized that he was choking. He wasnt breathing. Dh tried to stick his pinky down his throat, he said he felt it but wasnt able to get it. So DH grabbed Pnut and put his body in between under his arm took his fingers and closed pnut nose holes and pushed on his belly.... The treat popped out!! Of course it was the head of the treat!!! OMG I couldnt believe it!! If it was just me at the house I know I would have lost Pnut. To this day I am so careful of what I give PNUT he still doesnt "chew" things so everything he gets is small for him just in case he swallow it hole!!!

| Im so glad hes OK, I know how scary it can be. one night me and my pups went to bed and while sleeping the newest pup came and jumped hard onto my stomach and it woke me up, she was wiggling around and I hurried and turned on the light. trying to wake up at first I knew some thing was wrong but what. I finally see her mouth open and there was nothing else I could do but reach in and grab what was stuck in her mouth, well it wasn't just stuck in her mouth but it was all the way down her throat and it was in there tight. It was an old raw hide that use to be the bigger dogs. she must of got up in the night and started chewing on it making it soggy/soft and some how choked. I remember pulling it out and thinking Oh My Gosh wheres the end. it just kept coming. its was very think and long about as long as a pop can. if she hadn't ran and jumped on my stomach to wake me up she would of choked to death. and there was no way she could of coughed some thing like that up. it was lodged. |
