Help Pancreatitis, what food now? I know I hadn't been on here in some time. My 95 year old mother moved in with me 1-1/2 years ago. She just passed in July. So I suppose I'm back. Adonis was diagnosed with Pancreatitis Monday, and spent 1 night in the hospital. He was doing so well they let me take him home Tuesday. But his food has to change. Vet sells only Hills brand prescription. I'd done some reasearch Monday night here, and know that's not a good brand. I saw where some of you were feeding Purina HA or EN, instead of Science diet, and your babies have done well on it. I can't find that anywhere right now. I just got back from the major 2 pet stores in town. I know after much research here Monday night to get Low Fat food. I went with Innova Low Fat. That's the best I could find in anything that resembled low fat food. Innova has 7-9% crude fat. Do you all think that's low enough? Should I start calling other vets to see who carries Purina HA or EN? Or just try the Innova and hope for the best? I don't quite know what to do right now, and I'm supposed to slowly start him back on food today, and get him off the chicken and rice.

| I'm so sorry about your mother. I can't remember the exact fat % in EN and HA, but as far as I remember, either could work. Vets have suppliers and those suppliers should be able to get you Purina HA or EN. If your vet isn't wanting to deal with it, they can write you a script that you can get filled at another vet's office or online. Innova may be okay, but that 9% fat is a minimum. You'd have to talk to them to see what the maximum is. In the case of pancreatitis, it may be best to go with a food specially formulated for this. It wouldn't hurt to contact Innova though. Royal Canin also has a low fat food available.

The bag of Innova says Max crude fat is 9%. I didn't know my vet "could" order it. They didn't tell me that. Just said the one they sell is hills science diet which is a big NO NO. Thanks, I'll call vet before they close.

Ok, not too happy now. I called. They can't order it Told me to call another clinic. I called them, and they only carry Purina EN. They don't carry HA. From what I understand, most here have had better success with the HA. And my vet is closed tomorrow. Would Purina EN be better than Innova low fat? I'm so lost. I just do not want him to get sick again. Last edited by Bnot; 10-07-2009 at 01:57 PM. Reason: Forgot to add something

Both EN and HA contain medium chain triglycerides which is a form of fat that is more easily digested. So it isn't always the percent of fat that counts. Sometimes it is the source. EN does contain animal fat which isn't very specific. It could be beef, lamb, pork, or one other one that I forget now. Mabye goat. Innova may not have the same qualities. Science Diet out out because of the by-products, right?

I think its because it contains pork, is what I get from reading many many posts here. And their babies had a relapse after eating it.

She had been on homecooked and I would switch up the ingredients. She happened to be eating beef when it happened. I just stayed away from beef after that and everything turned out okay. Her food is still 18% fat and we don't have a problem with it. That is the exception and not the rule though.

I don't really want to get into home cook. Neither of my babies ever get table scraps. I knew that was a big no no long time back when I joined YT. I've learned a lot over the years from folks here. That's why when Adonis got his dx, I got on here that night he was in the hospital. I have a feeling this hasn't been his first bout with it. He's been known to throw up from time to time. Usually right after he's been outside, and eating grass. A time or 2, I'd take up food and water overnight, and he'd be fine the next day. Thanks so much you all.

Presley suffers from the dreaded pancreatitis...he has since he was about 7. The first one scared the life out of me...he was vomiting blood and so much of it. My vet has put him on a low residue dog food - hard food. Iams. No table food whatsoever. He did well on it with an attack or two a year...but, then we started giving him the can version daily and he hasn't had an attack in about 1 1/2. He does still get the hard food as well.
