| Spaying questions? Help~I'm confused Tootsie is scheduled to be spayed and have 6 baby teeth pulled on October 2. She will be about 6 1/2 months old at that time. I don't really know what to expect~after reading some of the threads I am REALLY confused!!! Our vet says it's better to do it when she's younger but now I'm worried that it may cause her problems with her growth hormones Oh yea, one more thing is it necessary to do the pre op bloodwork? Our vet says that they normally do that for older dogs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..We only want the best for her!!! Also, does anyone know how long the pain will last from her baby teeth being pulled? She currently eats dry kibbles, I see that being somewhat of a problem for her when she comes home from the vet on "the big day!"

6months is a good age to spay her. Yes you should always do blood work before a SX. I dont know why the vet said that, usually vets will WANT to do blood work in a younger pup before a spay.. I would do the blood work. She will be in some pain after her sx, with her mouth she will hurt maybe for a couple days, it is best to add water to her dry food to make it soft. She should eat only soft food for 2-3 days.

| The growth hormone thing is more a concern in larger dogs. I would get it done now. Yes, preop bloodwork on all dogs is best as is an IV and surgery done on a heated surface. The tooth pulling shouldn't cause too much pain because the pain meds that the vet puts her on for her spay (which he/she should do) will take care of it. You can feed canned food if you want.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | My Prada was spayed last year at 6 months of age, she was 5.7 pounds, I had a blood panel done before the surgery, just to make sure she was fine. the only other thing I can suggest is go and buy a pack of 3 onesies the ones the babies wear make a slit for the tail and have them ready for when she comes home, I did not like the cone shape thingy they put to keep her from licking her stiches and the onesie worked wonderfully. I got Prada the 0-3 months size and it was great, I keept it in one until the stiches were disolved and she checked ok.. I only removed it for her to go potty. best of luck with her surgery.. hugs, cArmen in nj |

| Thanks to all replies!!! I never even thought about her having the stitches~and the onesie idea is wonderful...I think we will go ahead with the bloodwork just to be on the safe side! And, definetly the moist food~she is on a LID for her allergies so I will get her some moist of the same brand!!! I know she will be fine~I just worry about my little one~I think this is going to be soooo tramatic for her!!!

I have had dogs come home and start playing right away and also eat hard food. I do think it is a little harder on the girls so just make sure you have a warm comfy bed in a special spot for her away from a lot of traffic..she will sleep better and tomorrow she will almost be back to herself. Make sure you leave water and food by her.

| Just checking on Tootsie to see if she did okay with her surgery. Sophie was spayed at 6 months old, and it only effected her for the rest of that day. She was fine after that, like nothing had happened. In fact, she really didn't eat her kibble before her surgery (she had 10 baby teeth pulled at the same time). As soon as she got home, she took to her kibble and we never had to moisten it again! Hope all is well. |
