Default Raw Prey Diet Puppy

I have a female 12 week old puppy that I am feeding raw. The question I have is how much should she be eating in a day. I have been told/read two different amounts. First being 10% of actual body weight until it exceeds what 3% of actual weight at full grown. Second being just feed 3% of actual weight. She was the runt of the litter weighing 32oz at 10 weeks. She has been on raw since we got her 10 weeks. I weighed her today and she is 40oz. She eats between 2oz to 4oz of ground chicken (leg quarters) a day. She would eat more sometimes if I let her. I know 4oz is a bit much but hoping it will allow her to catch up a little bit on size. She also eats 2.5oz of ground pork twice a week. 2.5oz of mackerl once a week. She also has eat a half of sweet potato once a week. She also eats about an ounce of liver jerky (treats) every day. This she will do anything for. She has already figured out to ring the bell by the door gets a treat. Is there anyting I can add that will help with tears. Not much of a problem yet but for future reference. Thanks for your time.

You should be feeding 10% of her weigh now or 2-3% of her projected adult weight. At 12 weeks, she should still be getting 4 meals a day.

You say you are feeding ground meats. Are you adding bone? Calcium is absolutely necessary, especially to a growing puppy. I hope that you are grinding bone in with the meat. She should be eating 80% meat, 10% bone and later on you can add 10% organs, with 5% of the organ meat being liver.

She's only been raw fed 2 weeks and you are already on 3 different proteins. That's a little fast in my book. I'd stick with chicken for now. I wouldn't do ground either. She is old enough to eat without it being "pre-chewed" for her as ground is.

I'd start with a cornish hen and work your way through it. You could give her a cornish hen breast with bone attached, for example for one of her meals. You can ribbon the meat or cut some deep slices in it so she has something to grab onto. Then sit back and let her eat. If she is a gulper or eats fast, you want to feed pieces that are at least as large as her head so she can't swallow them whole. She needs to work for her food, not just inhale it.

I would cut out the sweet potato, she doesn't need it. And I wouldn't give the jerky treats either. At this point, you just want to concentrate on getting her to eat whole, bone in pieces of chicken. Is there a reason why you are feeding ground?

I am grinding hind quarters. Actually my boyfriend has a Rottwieler puppy he was feeding raw and convinced me to feed my puppy raw. I asked him why he was grinding the meat. He said he is gonna transition to the hole leg quarter when the jaw muscle is strong enough to chew the bone. The jerky treat is for the rottie (Akia) she is going to be doing Schutzhund so my boyfriend uses this as a treat for part of training. Two weeks and he has my babby sitting, laying down, stay, ring a bell at the door (she gets treat for this but still goes outside) she rings it alot and just wants the treat but this has helped with house breaking. If liver jerky works why change this. She gets a very small amount each time. My boyfriend told me not to overt reat her because the liver jerky is very rich and could upset her stomach. He weighs out his jerky for his puppy and gives me a small amount for the day. My boyfriend told me once her stool settles that I can add one protien a week into her diet. He had me add in 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin to 4 oz of ground chicken leg quarters and split this up over two days four meals a day. She wants to eat more so I give it to her. He tells me not to do this but I don't want her to be hungry. On average I go through 8oz in three days. My concern is I am pretty sure my boyfriend knows the diet requirments for a Rottweiler but is this the same for my little yorkie. He says that they pretty much would eat the same in the wild expect Yorkies would be eating rodents and Rottweilers eat small animals. I know my baby likes this food cause she now won't even look at a bowl of dry dog food. Its funny you mention about inhaling food. She does this and my boyfriend has hand fed her to slow down her eating. I have always thought you should leave a dog alone when they are eating. He told me this is wrong you don't want to have to leave your dog alone when they are eating. He is always playing with her (taking her food-he gives it right back)(has her eating off of his finger) (petting her while she is eating) He said you want to do this cause this is what kids do when they get bit so let the dog know that this in normal and ok. He does this alot more with his dog than mine. FYI he told me about this forum and told me to ask any questions about babby and said lots of people will give you their input on various subjects. So thank you all for reading my post.

I asked him aboout the Sweet Potatoe and he said that the raw prey diet does not give the puppy enough of Vit A. He said Sweet Potatoe is rich in Vit A. I only gave her half of one. He gave his puppy two whole ones. The ground leg quarters does include the bone. Again thanks for reading my post

I think you have the right idea, but in addition to the ground mix you are using, you can add in a chicken wing, whole not ground, and see how she does, or half a cornish hen breast. I think you will see how quickly she will learn to eat the raw and relish it. The ground doesn't give her jaws a workout at all and doesn't do anything for her teeth.

How are her stools? If they are loose, add more bone. If they are hard and she seems to be straining to go, then add more meat.

Remember that she needs MOSTLY MEAT, a little bone, and a little liver. if the liver treats aren't giving her loose stools, then they are fine. By the way, those liver treats have a LOT of vitamin A so you don't need the sweet potato unless you just want to give it. No harm, no foul.

Sounds like your boyfriend is getting you off to a good start!

Thanks for the advise. I will pick up some chicken wings this weekend. We have been keeping an eye on her stools and they seem ok. There is no doubt she really likes the raw food. My boyfriend game me a book to read on it its called Raw Meaty Bones. I am starting to feel alot more comfortable feeding my puppy this way. Thank you for your advise.

I've always understood it to be 2-3% of projected ideal weight.
