I think you are right. My male does eat everything and I do think it is just out of curiosity. My liver baby won't even eat so I don't have to worry about her at all! I have a vet that totally disagrees with home cooking and thinks Science Diet and Royal Canine are the best foods out there...these foods may work well for some, I just wish he'd be more open minded about some others. In a city as big as Houston, you'd think I could find not an ok vet, but a great one. I'm on the lookout!!!

To answer your original question, I use Dr. Remillard out of Angell.
I know of two people who have used Dr. Wakshlag out of Cornell and like him.

All three of us have liver compromised dogs.

As long as homecooking is done correctly, it is fine.
Oh those great rx diets, they don't work for everyone.
I believe they are very necessary in some cases, but in others they are a disaster.

We tried RC LS 14 and Ellie had an intolerance to him (itchies). Then she developed IBD/SIBO/food intolerance issues and we tried Purina HA and SD Z/D Ultra. The one made her stool so hard that she could barely go and the other made her diarrhea lots worse. So that horrible homecooking that some vets seem to hate, they better be glad some clients are willing to do it for their pets or those same vets would have to work a lot harder at finding acceptable foods.

I agree. Lola, my LS baby, is on Hills LD and Royal Canin Hep 14, and she does fine on that as long as I hand feed her 4 times a day. Hopefully after September we'll be able to change that, but if not she seems to be doing well on it. My male had all sorts of GI problems on commercial food, so I started homecooking for him several months ago and he has not had 1 problem since. It was very simple, organic chicken, rice and green beans with a multivitamin. I realize that it was not completely balanced, but he was doing so much better than before, I hated to make any changes. Of course when my vet heard that, he wanted to blame Harley eating the leaves on his diet - even though the other 2 trips we've made for the same thing (bloody stools after eating a dead leaf, etc.) were while he was on commercial dog food! My life would be much easier if I could just feed him a commercial brand food, but his little tummy just dosen't seem to agree with most brands. That is the reason I was looking for a good nutritionist.

Thanks for the info. Right at the moment I am looking for a nutritionist for my healthy male, not my little LS girl. I am sure if these nutritionists that you all have recommended came up with special diets for liver compromised babies, they surely should be able to come up with one to feed my fat, healthy male that will eat the finish off the floor - literally! Thanks!

Here's her recipe for yorkies:

I usually double the batch:
1/2 lb lean ground beef (80% or leaner)
2 can sardines (or canned salmon of the same weight)
1 cup cooked rice
1/2 c. veg of choice (spinach, carrots, etc.)
2 large eggs (slightly cooked)
3/4 tablespoon bone meal
1/2 teaspoon potassium
1 tablespoon safflower oil
= 1569 calories

I find the sardines rather smelly - so I substitute 4 oz of cottage cheese or ground turkey (I usually do both!). My hubby hunts, so I sometimes replace the hamburger with deerburger. Do not substitute ground pork. Since I removed the sardines (a very important ingredient), then I squeeze a fish oil caplet every other day over her breakfast. I also add 1/3 childrens multivitamin daily (the ones without artificial sweetener). Feel free to add 1 oz of liver to the batch - its good for them. All human grade products.

I get the bone meal and potassium from iherb.com.

I first made a batch without all the supplements - just to see if Bailey liked it. SHE LOVED IT - so its been this recipe ever since!

I serve one spoonful per serving (the larger spoons) twice a day. It doesnt seem like much - I know. I store it in 10 oz plastic containers about 3/4 full in the freezer- one container lasts about 3 days.

Tip: I put the raw eggs in the hot rice and let it sit a while (hence partially cooked eggs)

yup they are yucky critters...haha, the fish oil pills are easy to pin prick and they don't squirt until you push on them to. easy fix to give her the omega 3s

i can't wait to make another batch, but i made a double batch a month ago and she's only eaten 4 little cups so far...we store in the freezer and thaw out when we get low on one...it's so simple to live this way and so much better for her than kibble...i did free feed royal canin indoor puppy for her first week or so, i've since pulled it up because she's a bit of a gluten and she was porking up...

she's only 8 weeks so we feed her a teaspoon three times a day right now
after 1 year move to a tablespoon 2 times a day

The diet I had created was for Roxy, my liver issue girl. Dr. W told me how much more protein I needed to add for TJ my healthy boy (whom needs to loose a little weight )

That sounds like my issue. Lola is on a special diet - right now she's still on Hills LD and RC Hep 14, and my little male loves to sneak her kibble. I know there is not enough protein and it's so hard to keep these two seperated while they eat. Hopefully her next BAT will show even better numbers and we can increase her protein and change her food.

I'm concerned that in this recipe, the hamburger can be 80% lean; this is still too high in fat. If you have ever fried it, there is a lot of fat left in the pan, some people boil it, and this would remove some of the fat as well, but this recipe is raw I believe, and that's an awful lot of fat. By the way, I'm not suggesting frying it.

i think it means not anything less than 80% lean, i would use 90/10 if you can or even 95/5 if they have it...we use ground venison, so it's leaner than the hamb. to begin with...but yea use the best and least fatty hamb you can find...
