| Does anyone make their own raw recipe? I have used Natures Variety raw medallions. Am thinking about using Wysong Archetype. Does anyone make their own raw food? Using a grinder and grinding up a whole chicken and adding ingredients, etc? I have a very picky eater. He won't just eat a raw chicken wing. He likes it to look/smell/taste like canned I guess. He is on the NV chicken medallions now but is not thrilled with them. I'm looking for other alternatives and thought maybe making my own raw might work? Opinions? |

| I make my own raw food, but it isn't based on the BARF diet, it is based on a recipe from Dr Pitcairn. I just cook the oats, add raw meat, vegetables and all the needed supplements and voila - enough food for both of mine for 14 days. I also use organ meat like hearts, livers and kidneys and this lowers the cost tremendously. If you would like the recipe, let me know. If you want a BARF diet, just google it. Dogz at Home has some good suggestions. Good luck.

| Hehe, the only bad question is an unanswered one I think Dr Pitcairn is better simply because the diet is researched extensively and it includes all the food groups, vitamins and minerals. The diet is also based on organic-type foods without any pesticides, etc. and this is what we, as humans, prefer and should be using. I buy the Healthy Powder from Vondi's, a local pet store, but you can easily make your own. You will need two cups nutritional or brewer's yeast, 1 cup lecithin granules, 1/4 cup kelp powder, 4 tablespoons bone meal and 1000 milligrams vitamin C or 1/4 teaspoon sodium ascorbate. Simply mix all the ingredients together in a 1-quart container and refrigerate. For the recipe, I make Doggie Oats: 5 cups raw rolled oats, 3 pounds (6 cups) raw, whole, ground or chopped heart, kidney, liver and other minced meats, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1 cup cooked vegetables (use carrots if you want to omit the vitamin A supplement), 6 tablespoons Healthy Powder, 4 teaspoons bone meal, 10 000 IU vitamin A, 400 IU vitamin E, 1 teaspoon tamari soy sauce or 1/4 teaspoon iodized salt and 1-2 cloves garlic. Simply boil 10 cups of water, add the oats, cover and turn off the heat. Let the oats cook for about 10 to 15 minutes. Don't stir while cooking or the oats will become mushy. Add the other ingredients and voila! A 10lbs dog needs 410 Kcals a day and one cup of the food contains 230 Kcals. I freeze my dogs' daily meals in plastic bags - one for each day. I find this easier than a container that needs to be washed every day. The plastic bags also ensures that every day's meal is fresh. The entire recipe makes 14 days' worth of food for my 2 babies. Just be careful, Cash opened the fridge yesterday to get to more food!

| I'm thinking about making my own raw food but trying to find the "best" recipe is hard. I feel like I need to be a scientist or a dietician to get all the nutrients right which is scary. This is what I was thinking.... Grind up chicken wings (bones included), add about 10% heart/liver, a pound of ground buffalo or lean beef, shredded carrots. Grind up to canned food consistency. Add Nupro powder before feeding ... NUPROSUPPLEMENT.COM I've tried feeding raw chicken wings, just as a supplement to Orijen kibble, and he won't eat them. But he does like canned. And he does like NV medallions OK. I also tried a sample of Wysong Archetype (dehydrated meat) and he loved that too. So that's why I thought he might do OK on a homemade diet. Opinions??? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Just fyi - forgot to tell you that the link I gave you for the recipe -- that recipe was developed by a PhD canine nutritionist.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | When I was looking into it, if I recall correctly, you could buy Urban Wolf at other places...I think I searched on google or something...not sure if another vendor would have better US prices or not. What a bummer!
