| Bladder stones-New to forum Hello My name is Terri I have a 7 yr old female yorkie and I have suspected since she had puppies last may her urinary behavoir changed. Took her to vet and she had bacterial infection, Put on on meds and still problem. I suspected stones. Took her to a vet for xrays today and she has lots of bladder stones. Tomorrow I find out when she gets surgery. It has been a nightmare getting up and down all night with her. I told the breeder about her urinary change and she said it was probably nothing but it was and i could tell she was trying to pee but couldnt. The vet said they are not the calcium type, but she will need to go on a special diet of purina urinary food or walthums? anyway its 15.00 for a 8 pound bag. Does anyone know of anytrhing cheaper that works. I cried all day because I thought I was going to have to have her put to sleep.. I believe she got a uti after having pups and it caused the stonesa going untreated because I did not know she had one until her pee patern turned into pee in the house and no pee but trying and blodd in urinalisius.. Do any of you think that having pups caused the stones? I wanted to breed her one more time but obviously I cant even though she is in heat and needs surgery. It would be inhumane. The vet said this is the first case of bladder stones in a yorkie he has seen. Any help will be appreciated. I love my dog to death, she comforts me when I am upset and my cat thinks she is the dogs mother thanks Terri |

| HI and welcome... My female, Bitsy, RIP. did have bladder stones and she was about 7 to 9yrs I think. They were Calcium Salcilate<sp?> but the vet did Not know what kind they were until After the surgery so for him to say they were not calcium seems strange. They can be very painful and will block off the flow. What happend to Bitsy is the 2 stones she had were to large to pass, she only weighed 5#. She started with frequency when I realized she was going more than normal I wiped her and saw the urine was pink meaning blood in the urine. She had the surgery pretty quick after the diagnosis and did fine afterward. She did have dietary restrictions and was on Science Diet UD Canned food until she was 16yrs when she passed. It will be kind of expensive but its best to buy it by the case or if it comes in kibble the larger size, it is actually cheaper that way in the long run. Ofcourse it's all in what you can afford. I'm abit concerned that the vet has never seen stones in a Yorkie, it is actually kind of common. One of my males had them too. Be sure he has done the surgey before he does it.. Want to be sure he knows what he's doing. You might want to get an estimate of what is ALL gonna cost. I think Bitsy's was close to a thousand bucks, but thats in Tampa. Try to encourage fluids, maybe if she has one in the canal she can get it to flush it out and reduce the pain she is in. She Is in pain... You can request a prescription for pain so both of you can get some sleep. Do Not breed her again... The surgery is pretty tough and it would not be fair, plus having x rays will cause problems with puppies. She will need to not be bred for a while so everyting can heal and she can carry a pregnancy. It is considered a major surgery. Good Luck, Prayers coming your way.. PLease keep us posted as to how the two of you are doing..... Hugs, Sharon

| Stones aren't normally a life threatening issue. It sounds like she will be fine. Have you thought about getting her spayed during this surgery? Did they try to dissolve the stones with diet first? If you want to feed a different food or homecook instead, you can talk to a veterinary nutritionist about an acceptable replacement. Has she been cleared of liver shunt?

| My 13 year old male Chipper had bladder stones. I was not aware that he even had an issue until he got up and started walking down the hall and peed. This little guy never had an accident in the house since he was a puppy. The urine was dark so I knew there was a problem. Took him to the vets had x-rays and the stones were found. The vet told me that bladder stones were quite common in yorkies. He had surgery the next day. The vet removed the kidney stones, there were 7 of them. The vet also noticed that there was an unusual thickening of the bladder wall and he did a biopsy on that. When all the results of the tests came back It was found the stones were the calcium type and the unusual thickening of the bladder wall was cancer. Until the surgery is done and the test results come back you really don't know exactly what you're dealing with.

| UPDATE on Mini's Bladder stones The vet did not see any kidney sones, the bottom of her bladder is full of the non calcium type, he will operate tueday and cut her open. She will spend the night She is on Clavamox now and is sleeping for longer periods THANKGOD! I am getting her spayed after she has healed real good. Not taking any chances of loosing my dog. She will be on a special diet of one he has. I paid another vet 65.00 for a urine test and sensitivity and he put her on sulfa and it did not help. His office referred me to a lady named viginia who works with animal welfare and rescue. They paid 150. for the xray and clavamox. I will give them 250.-thats all I have, another organization is paying 200. and whatever is left will be picked up by animal welfare. I am so lucky. I thought I was going to have to put her down due to the cost or hand her over to rescue and loose my dog. Today she is getting a haircut and bath I am soooooooooooooo lucky these organizations are helping. I am on disability and my dog is my EVERYTHING to me. Thank you all for your respones |

| I'm glad she is feeling better and you are getting her spayed. Here is some great information on struvite bladder stones for you: Canine Struvite Bladder Stones As far as food goes, unless you plan on homecooking which would be much more expensive, she should stay on a prescription diet. Since Yorkies are so small, a bag will last you awhile. Since she is seven now, she is officially a senior dog. It is normal that she will develop more health issues as she ages that will require vet visits, medications, special diets, etc. so be prepared. |

| I'm so glad you were able to find organizations to help you with the cost of your baby's surgery. I know with Chipper his x-rays and surgery cost over $1500 and I lost him within 6 weeks from the cancer. But we do what we have to do to keep our babies healthy. Good Luck with the surgery.
