| Is butter bad? We were bbq and had a bowl of melted butter that we were spreading on the food. The bowl was on the ground and I caught Rosie eating the butter. I'm not sure how much of it she ate and she seems fine. Should I be concerned about her consuming butter? |

| Any time a dog eats too much of a fatty food, there's a risk that they could develop pancreatitis. Yorkies have a breed predisposition for developing it, unfortunately. That said, don't panic. My aunt's six pound yorkie girl ate a whole stick of butter that was out on their table while the family was not looking, and she was fine-- not all dogs that decide to gorge themselves on something fatty will get sick. Watch Rosie closely. When dogs develop pancreatitis, they become lethargic and depressed, their tummies will often distend and be painful to the touch, and they'll often vomit and have diarrhea. If she begins acting sick, call a vet right away. I hope everything turns out okay for you and your girlie.

| It can either happen as a result of long-term feeding patterns or one-time instances. I've seen both types of cases, including an older dog just a few months back who died two days after getting into some turkey scraps after a life time of healthy eating. I honestly find it to be one of the scarier conditions out there since there's so little you can do to predict which dogs will end up developing it and which will be perfectly fine.

| She should be just fine. Ellie has had pancreatitis and I'm pretty sure that beef triggered it. She got beef awhile back and of course I was so nervous about it happening agaiin that I had to induce vomiting. Fun stuff. Food has never been shown to cause pancreatitis but rather trigger an episode as far as I know.

| Thanks everyone for the response. She threw up about 1-2 hours after eating the butter, so I think she threw it all up and didn't get much in her system. She acting like herself, but I'll keep an eye on her for a few more days. |
