It can either happen as a result of long-term feeding patterns or one-time instances. I've seen both types of cases, including an older dog just a few months back who died two days after getting into some turkey scraps after a life time of healthy eating.

I honestly find it to be one of the scarier conditions out there since there's so little you can do to predict which dogs will end up developing it and which will be perfectly fine.
