bright red blood in poop Ok, I don't know if I should be extremely worried, but today there was bright red blood with some diahhrea when Buddy pooped this afternoon. He did his business as usual this morning, and it was normal, then all of a sudden a little blood. He was scooting this morning, which I know is a sign that it may be his anal glands, so figured that maybe they needed to be expressed. It was my first time doing this, but I finally did it (externally)...it sure stunk. I thought I got it all, and Buddy was back to his usual playful self. Then right after he has his bloody poop later in the day, he was scooting again...so I again expressed his anal glands, and more came out (guess I didn't get it all the first time). He hasn't been lethargic or exhibiting any other signs of discomfort or illness, so I'm not sure if the blood was a result of his anal glands being blocked up, or if there is a more serious issue. This is the first time that this has happened. He didn't eat much today, but he is a picky eater, and will usually wait until later at night to chow down. He's been drinking plenty of water and playing with his little sister, so I'm confused as to what might be the problem. Any ideas would be of great help. I'm going to make a vet appointment if there is not improvement tomorrow. I'm giving him canned pumpkin with some rice and chopped up boiled chicken breast. I've heard that pumpkin helps with loose stools. Sorry such a long post. Thanks again.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm taking him to the vet. He ate this morning like he never ate before...and then pooped...at first i was semisoft...no blood. Then a few minutes later....another poop, this time really soft with a little blood and mucous. Other than that, he seems his normal self...no signs of pain...very playful...poor little guy. I will update once we find out what's wrong.

Talked to the vet...and she is booked for today. She asked if Buddy was eating and drinking normally..and if he was straining to go. I told her he has been his normal self...no signs of straining when he goes, and he eats and drinks normally...just has blood and mucous in his poop. She told me to come in tomorrow.

Update Buddy saw the vet last night...and avoided the dreaded rectal thermometer since he was bright and alert when the doctor examined him. We were given some metronidizole to help with the soft poop...and told to keep Buddy on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice(which I was already doing). Other than that, the doctor did not find anything seriously wrong with Buddy. He did warn us not to give him bully sticks...which may have caused all this. The vet said that bully sticks can cause stomach upset...so we should not be giving them to our little dogs. We gave him a bully stick that I recently bought off of a YTer....just a few days before this all started. I had given him bully sticks before (but bought it from someone else)...and he was fine. I guess not all bully sticks are made the same. In any case, Buddy is ok, and on the mend.

It could be colitis. If it is this will not be the last time it happens. The med the vet gave you is what is used for colitis.
