Unhappy bright red blood in poop

Ok, I don't know if I should be extremely worried, but today there was bright red blood with some diahhrea when Buddy pooped this afternoon. He did his business as usual this morning, and it was normal, then all of a sudden a little blood. He was scooting this morning, which I know is a sign that it may be his anal glands, so figured that maybe they needed to be expressed. It was my first time doing this, but I finally did it (externally)...it sure stunk. I thought I got it all, and Buddy was back to his usual playful self. Then right after he has his bloody poop later in the day, he was scooting again...so I again expressed his anal glands, and more came out (guess I didn't get it all the first time). He hasn't been lethargic or exhibiting any other signs of discomfort or illness, so I'm not sure if the blood was a result of his anal glands being blocked up, or if there is a more serious issue. This is the first time that this has happened. He didn't eat much today, but he is a picky eater, and will usually wait until later at night to chow down. He's been drinking plenty of water and playing with his little sister, so I'm confused as to what might be the problem. Any ideas would be of great help. I'm going to make a vet appointment if there is not improvement tomorrow. I'm giving him canned pumpkin with some rice and chopped up boiled chicken breast. I've heard that pumpkin helps with loose stools. Sorry such a long post. Thanks again.
