| Ellie, I've been trying to check in to this science diet natures best. My oldest yorkie has allergies really bad. I thought I may give that a try to see if maybe that will help her with the allergies |

Food allergies are developed after periods of time eating a certain ingredient. To minimize food allergies, an elimination diet is often necessary. However, if you have had your dog its whole life, you should know what he's gotten in the past. Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets are a wonderful choice for food allergies, as they contain a novel protein source, and either sweet potatoes or regular potatoes, and little else. If your baby has environmental allergies, a fatty acid supplement (such as salmon oil) is very high in natural anti-inflammitories that can help suppress the immune response to the allergens. Good luck.

While Science Diet Nature's Best Chicken flavor is far from the worst dog food, it isn't the type I'd use for allergies.

Thanks Amanda, she is on a capsule, which I looked over good lastnight and realized it was just a vitamin with fish oil, etc in it. I think the vet wants her on that the rest of her life, but, am going to hopefully be able to do away with it. 50 years of owning dogs, and I've never had one with allergies. | |

YT 2000 Club Member | My vet also didnt agree with the high protien foods. My dogs didnt do well after a few months of being on a high protien diet. Some dogs just dont handle all that protien well. My dogs definitly needed more in the thier diet then just meat. 3 of my dogs are on science diet's nature's best, lamb and brown rice (21.5 percent protien) and my sheltie is on science diet I/D because he has fatty blood issues. Not the best food out there, but the not worse either. They like it, are doing well on it and its easy to find.

I started slowly switching mine about 2 weeks ago when my feed store stopped selling the dogswell. I started with the chicken nature's best but Tucker started itching agian so about 7 days ago I started with the lamb and he isnt itching anymore. I have them all compelely switched over now and they are all doing great. I started out with the regular size bites too and the peices really arent much bigger than the small bites. My guys did fine with both. I know that I can always find it so they will stay on it. I have no intentions of ever switching them again.

| Hey Lissette, the dogswell? They kind of quit eating it, so, switched back to Taste of the Wild, then Haley was itching, so, put them on Nutrish(Rachel Ray), and since she was still itching, decided, after talking to the vet, to give her something with lamb in it, so, went with the science diet. Hopefully this one will work. LOL |

| Remember, it can take a few months to see the full effect food has on a pup. Many side effects could occur (loose stools, some itching, belly aches etc) but you need to give time for food to settle into your pup's routine. I hope something works out for everyone's doggies!! I feed Evo and it has a ton of protein (42%), but my dog thrives on it. All dogs are different, the key is, to find something that works for you and your dog. Good Luck!!

| This is what I've been feeding Sophie also since 12 weeks. I ran to PetSmart last week to grab another bag (I buy the small ones as the large ones go stale and she won't eat it) and seen that Royal Canin also has an "Indoor Puppy 27". I grabbed a bag of that as she is an indoor dog? She's up to around 8 lbs now and will be 7 months old on Wen. April 8th. She also likes the organic meal mixed in her dry food from time to time. I can't remember the name but I buy it at PetSmart. It looks like a summer sausage when out of it's plastic wrapper. I will be switching to the Yorkie mix when she hit's 10 months. As that's what the recommended switch date is. |

| She is on a capsuel(it's huge) that she takes every other day. The first day she actually ate the whole capsule, then yesterday, I clipped the end and poured it on some bread for her. |

| often when people have their dogs bile acid tested and it is a little high, it is because of too much protein in the diet. According to my vet. he also told me to keep mine under 28%. High Protein dog food can also cause kidney failure. Last edited by Sugar's Mom; 04-06-2009 at 11:26 AM. |
