vet said too much protein?
 
The reason I changed to Natures Balance. My babies got to where they weren't eating the Science Diet so I started giving them scrambled eggs with cheese, boiled chicken, no preservatives turkey and chick lunch meat and chicken livers on occasion, peas, greenbeans. The vet said it wasn't a balanced meal and getting too much protein so she gave me a bag of Purina Pro Plan. After reading the ingredients and doing research it was full of junk in my opinion, no offense. I went to pet store and spent an hour reading the bags of dog food:). I was looking at the protein content and fat. Natures balance seemed to be low. What is too much protein for a 5lb. bag of food and what is considered not enough?

I feed mine Royal Canin, specially fromulated for yorkies. There is so much controversy over dog foods, it is hard to know what is right. So I figure one that is made with a yorkies needs in mind would be the best. It's 33% crude protein

My vet has always said 18 to 24% for my Yorkies. I know there are new foods on the market now that are much higher and there is some argument about if the protein is from a quality source it's fine but...I'll stick with my vet recommendations of 18 to 24%.

The vets often don't know themselves much about dog nutrition. They sell what they were told to sell and they get deals with certain dog foods to sell their food. Science Diet is what my vet sells and recommends and it's not the greatest, in my opinion. But, yes, it's possible to have TOO much protein, especially for puppies. Some of the higher-protein foods are for one year or older.

Natures balance is 23% protein so I guess thats a good %.

The 33% is for the puppy formula #33, the yorkshire terrier #28 has 28 %

I just now came to realize that the number indicated in the name of the food correspond to the % of protein in that particular formula

When the vet said it wasn't a balanced diet, I think he was referring to your home cooking. Although most are healthy foods, I'm not sure about the chicken and turkey lunch meat, because even thought they say they have no preservatives, they often use salt to preserve, and they often have way to much salt, as well as fat, for a dog. Even if these were ok, it's still not balanced. Remember, a balanced human diet is not a balance dog diet. They need way more calcium than humans, a small yorkie needs as much as a grown women, and you can't give enough cheese to supplement the calcium, cheese also has too much fat and should be used sparingly. Most people who home cook, add supplements especially made for dogs, so unless you are planning to research and add supplements, I suggest you forget about the people food, and remember no processed people food, even the worst dog food is better for them, then processed people food.

Hi I am new to this website. I have tried regular puppy dry brands iams, beneful and now nutro. My 8lb. 6 month year old, Jeter (male) likes Nutro much better. Is it wrong to give him carrots, apples, rice? what "human" foods are recommended if at all. last, Jeter's poops also have been lose ish and a gold color. I hope this changes as he is eating nutro for longer period of time. Thanks

Just checked Canidae has 14% crude fat and 24%Protein. I have one on a low protein diet Science Diet ID but will switch to Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 (prescription)plus I give him (Avoderm Vegetarian Wet, about 3 to 4 tablespoons a day 7.5% protien and 4.00%Crude Fat). Lots of vegtables and fruit and cottage cheese about a teaspoon a day. Good Luck...Lissette

There are many human foods that are ok to give, but if you are not giving prepared dog food, you must give suppliments along with human foods. Many of us give human foods for the occational treat. Just avoid processed foods, for example a piece of apple is fine, an "apple wrap" is not. The protein isn't done by bag(each bag, even a 50 lb bag would say the same on protein), it's per serving. I

Some human foods are just fine to give in moderation.
If you aren't going to use supplements and have a nutritionist balance the diet, human foods really shouldn't make up more than about 10% (of the diet). Please Google "Consumer Affairs Nutro". This food is being blamed on sicknesses and death in many dogs.

Three foods brands that could get mixed up are:
Science Diet Nature's Best (type of Science Diet)
Natural Balance (brand of food)
Nutro (one common type of Nutro is Natural Choice)

Max eats Wellness Small Breed Adult Formula.
It is 28% protein.
