| Follow up on liver shunt surgery I just got back from Joey's follow-up visit to the vet for his liver shunt surgery. The vet we saw today said Joey's shunt was 90% closed, that they never can be completely closed, even though that is what the original vet told me. Is this any cause for concern? Also, they added metranidazole, which was very expensive and you need a refill every month because it expires so quickly. I wonder if he must be on this. He is already taking lactulose and she said he will always be on the special diet. He also didn't gain any weight which they weren't thrilled about, even though he's eating. I feel like this will never end. In three months, they will repeat the bloodwork and check for bladder stones. I guess he will never be a "normal" Yorkie. Just a little depressed.

| Metro is common with liver shunt patients but I haven't heard of given it after surgery. Maybe give it for a couple months and then decide? Would a pill form be okay? Entirelypets had 250 and 500 mg tabs for .12 and .19 each. I don't have an answer on whether the shunt should fully close but I would think so. He should be pretty much normal except for needing supplements, etc. unless he gets another shunt or unless he has MVD also. I guess it's possible that the amount of closure could have to do with what method was used to close it. Okay, I just went to read what Dr. Tobias has to say: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ Under the surgery section it says that a scintography could be performed 3-6 months post op to see if the shunt is close, so evidently they do close fully.

| As Crystal said Metro goes hand in hand with LS and Lactulose. Ask for an RX and shop around online for the best price. Your general Vet may have a better price too. Also ask for an RX for the Lactulose, and get it filled at Walmart or Costco (bigger bottles for cheap prices). Not sure about the shunt not closing...hmmm....I would def. ask Olga about that And sorry, but Joey will never be a normal dog, but with the proper diet, supplements, and regular Vet checks, he can come pretty darn close! |

| Yes - all that protocol sounds right for Joey...sorry to say... As for Raw and Sadie...well, there are some that just DO NOT like it (rare, but happens). TJ did NOT like NV chicken - wouldn't eat it. He liked the lamb for a short period of time. Now, he eats Stella and Chewy's Chicken Patties (AM and PM)- no problems at all. He also gets apple bit in the AM (just like Roxy) and romaine lettuce and green beans in the PM (just like Roxy). I have also been putting a little of Roxy's egg noodles on his plate too and he loves them Stella and Chewy's FRESH from the FARM Pet Food :: all-natural frozen and freeze-dried raw petfood for dogs and cats -Nicole |

| What tests have been and what the results. Surgery is recommended for a LS pup that is a good candidate bc it is very sucessful. Have you looked into Dr. Togas at the U of Tenn? They do lots and lots of LS surgeries per week. They are one of the leader in LS and the surgery and all tests cost about $1000 to $1300 |
