I don't have an answer on whether the shunt should fully close but I would think so. He should be pretty much normal except for needing supplements, etc. unless he gets another shunt or unless he has MVD also.

I guess it's possible that the amount of closure could have to do with what method was used to close it.

Okay, I just went to read what Dr. Tobias has to say:
Portosystemic Shunts FAQ

Under the surgery section it says that a scintography could be performed 3-6 months post op to see if the shunt is close, so evidently they do close fully.
I'm going to look into that about full closure. He is too small to take the pills so he has to take the suspension.
