| Ear infection--yeast??? Yesterday afternoon Puddin' started shaking her head a lot and by evening she was scratching her right ear. She shook and scratched and whimpered all night long...I got only 3 hours sleep, the poor baby kept me up. So, off to the vet this morning and I discover she has an ear infection (no surprise there), but the vet says it is a yeast infection. Fortunately it is mild...I caught it early...and with the treatment he gave me, she should be over it in a week or so. He wasn't very forthcoming when I asked how she got it...and if I don't know how she got it, I don't know what to do to prevent a recurrence. Anybody know anything about this? I was unaware that one could get yeast infections in the ears! Thanks!

| Sometimes when they get water in their ears after a bath. Usually will show up 7 to 10 days later. Always have LOTRIMEN Liquid (food fungus) not lotion. Put about 2 drops in each ear when she gets another one or if the vet is closed. This will clear it up right away.... |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I don't know (but I assume) that the yeast infection your Yorkie has is the same type of yeast infection humans get. Normally we only associate this with human female issues but it's much more prevalent than that. After my husband was hospitalized for a yeast infection in the bloodstream from his IV port, I learned quite a bit about it from reading and from his doctors. Apparently, we not only have the bacteria on us but it is all around us in our daily environment, too. The bacteria thrives on warm, moist places and is often not recognized as a yeast infection at all...for example, a baby's diaper rash and a breaking out commonly referred to as "heat rash" in the groin area or under the band of a bra is (in most cases) actually a yeast infection. (Shocking to me, too...LOL) |

| Humans as well as dogs are included in the species' that grow and maintain yeast in the body to do numerous things. Yeast infections usually arise as a result of yeast cells in or on the body, growing at an abnormal rate. Factors that influence the growth of yeast are: hot moist conditions, and an abundance of glucose or glycogen from nutritional intake, these two sugars are especially attractive to yeast as this is what they feed on, and alas, hormones may effectively increase the growth rate. If she was in the groomers recently, as stated, the bath water could not have been properly dried out of her ear, in essence causing a breeding ground for yeast to take over. The two things essential for its reproduction cycle are moisture and fuel( sugars). Best of luck |

| Yeast like warm, moist areas, so this is very common. The two major issues are keeping the ear clear of hair and always using a drying solution after they get wet. I don't pluck ear hair (but probably should be) but I do use Chlorhexiderm Flush after every bath (when I remember). They can also be bathed with cotton balls in their ears.
