| Lepto reaction.....scared Hello, My 4 month yorkie had a reaction to Lepto shot yesterday. I was not aware of the risk of what could happen. My vet gave it very matter of factly. We live in suburbs, and my yorkie stays inside. He had very bad reaction and we rushed him back to vet immed. and when we got there he had seizures. They gave him valium 3 times and sent home with 2 prenidsone tabs. when he came home, he was very spunky, but today, not as much, refusing his food, not as playful. Is this normal? I am so mad at the vet for not mentioning this to us, I could scream. Also, are there any long term effects that I need to worry about now? Thanks in advance. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sorry to hear about this, I think I would be looking for a new vet. Joey's breeder recommended that Lepto never be given, and Joey's vet won't do the shots on any dog. I don't know of the long-term affects, if he's refusing food, I would be concerned with hypoglycemia. Keep calling the vet, and let him know how sick your dog is, maybe he'll learn this isn't a good idea.

| Something very similar happened to us and it may have been caused by lepto also. Ellie collapsed, went into shock and unresponsive. All vaccines should be given AFTER given Benadryl from now on. Lepto can make even the dogs who do "well" with it tired and cause some inappetance. Are his gums pink? If you don't think he is pulling out of this right, then he may need to stay at the vet office for awhile. This is not terribly uncommon in Yorkies and long-term side effects of vaccination can include cancer, allergies, immune mediated diseases, etc.

Why would anyone get it, does it depend where you live?

| It sort of does depend where you live. Some states like Michigan are having a huge problem with it and the disease can cause kidney and liver problems and death. For larger dogs in MI who spend a lot of time outside, it is almost necessary depending on if they live by slow moving water or on a farm, etc. It is just so hard with small dogs. I think the vaccine is dangerous for them but vets have got to feel the pressure of, "If I don't give this and the dog gets lepto, I'm going to be sued...". I really can see why some breeders would say not to and why vets would say that they need to go ahead with it. It should really be up to the owner and based on what they are comfortable with. Personally I am 99% sure that no small dog of mine will ever get it again.

| Thanks for all your responses. I guess it is common here where we live is why he was given it. I have been in contact with the vet, but wanted some person experiences. Hopefully he'll have his appetite back. He is taking water and syrup though. Keep you posted. They are just so small, it's scary. I am most concerned with long term effects from this reaction. |
