New puppy-hospitalized blood sugar? HELP! Anyone who can help, I truly need advice right now! Friday Feb 4th, I flew to Nebraska from California and picked up my new baby, Gizmo male yorkie 14 weeks 1.7lbs, I was in love way before we touched. All was great flew home very calm played, loved and bonded. At 3 a.m. that evening began vomitting and again at 5:45, gave nutrical and water offered food, rushed to emergency at 6 a.m. and as of today Wednesday still there. Gizmo came from a breeder was weaned at 12 weeks, picky eater only a/d and nutrical night and morning. Hospital has done, parvo, fecal, blood test liver and x-rays all clear, diagnosis respitory infection and anirexia coupled with stress of flight. Goal keep on antibotics and sugar drip and wean from sugar and introduce food, much brighter doing well. As of last night bad news, he can not maintain his own blood sugar level, now the vets are going BACK TO THE LIVER. Breeder has grandparents and parents, no liver problems, x-rays showed normal size and no damage, apparently if there is a livershunt the liver is smaller. I am so up and down on this roller coaster, you see 12 hours together and 4 weeks of waiting I am bonded to him he is everything in personality, love and looks I wanted. My questions are any ideas from anyone? The hospital is insisting that if he needed nutrical he was not well before I got him, yet everything I have read under 2 lbs it is almost a necessity for them. How hard do I push here? Thanks to all for listening. Last edited by Gizzy's Mom; 02-09-2005 at 11:58 AM.

I know EXACTLY what you are going through. My yorkie is 8 weeks old yesterday and she has been going through the same problems as you and i have only had her a week. She is tiny. She is only 8 ounces. The first day I brought her home she wimpered a little bit I brought her to the vet the following day 02/02/05 and he said she was perfect checked her fecal sample and she received a clean bill of health. Well he put some revolution for puppies on her, and i brought her home and about 2-3 hrs later she was throwing up repeatedly, not eating or drinking. I started to get worried so I brought her back up to the vet. They checked for parasites again still negative, they gave her a shot to calm down her tummy but still she was throwing up. They gave me some a/d to try to feed her she didnt really like it though. Well about 7 the next moring i woke up to her whimpering(she sleeps with me) Her head flopped back she wouldnt eat and her pee was NEON yellow. I knew she was dehydrated and poss. hypoglocemic(sp) rushed her to the vet and she was. I left her with them and they immediately started giving her fluids, she hasnt throwing up since Friday. I give her Nutri-cal a couple times a day, feed her i/d with water out of a syringe she takes that fine plus I give her pedialyte and they have her on amoxidrops. Finally a few days ago they diagnosed her with giardia and coccidosis. You should have your vet check for those they checked her 3-4 times then FINALLY it showed up she is finally starting to do better. I dont have her back with me but i really think you should have them retest him for that. Good luck right back

Please ask your vets to do a bile acid test. This will confirm if there is a problem with the liver. Yorkie puppies are prone to hypoglycemic problems while they are young, even healthy ones. I have my puppies bile acid tested before they are sold so that I know there is not a liver shunt when they leave here. If your puppy is stressed or over active that can cause their blood sugar levels to drop also. That is also one of the reasons that toy puppies should be fed several times a day, and always have rest times, even if it means putting them into pens or crates and forcing them to rest. I do hope that your vet finds the problem and can help your little baby.

Thank you for the response, vet did bil acid and came back negative all clear, x-rays show normal liver size and they say it is heretitary and the breeder has parents and grandparents. My confusion is they said bil acid not always accurate and are doing a 7 panel test today. I am frustrated that every time we eliminate the liver they go back to it. Thanks for the input you are all wonderfull and truly helping!
