| Confused about feeding We took Adie and Skeeter to the new vet Saturday and now I am more confused about feeding them than I have ever been! Adie is a really picky eater and Skeeter is, we, Skeeter is a little pig and a full pound overweight. With 4 dogs I finally got everyone on the same food and now the vet tells me that we need to switch foods every couple of months because one food doesn't give them everything they need. She suggested that I switch the little ones to Bil Jac. I always thought that was a cheap food like a Walmart brand but she says no. What do y'all think? She recommends 1/4 cup of food once a day for the yorkies, adj 3/4 cup for the Shih tzu. (We are lucky if we can keep her at 12lbs. Plus she is almost 10 years old and I want her to be able to digest and chew her food ok. |

| While I don't normally tell people not to listen to their vets, please be careful. I would not follow that advice. In my opinion, Yorkies should be fed at least twice a day and preferrably more. They shouldn't be expected to store sugar for this long and be able to function. I would not feed Bil-Jac. There are better foods out there. And if the food is complete and balanced for adults, you aren't going to do much by switching foods as far as giving the everything they need. Theoretically, if a food is AAFCO approved, they are getting what they need. You may need to feed the older one a senior food and pups need pup food but adults would be fine on the same food for an extended period of time unless you are concerned about acquired allergies.

| I agree w/ Ellie May. I try to feed 3 times a day (now I have to feed 2 times a day, cuz of school), but it does add up to 1/4 cup.

| That is 1/4 c. per day! And I sure do thank you guys. I knew I was worrying for a good reason. I'm going to keep them going the same way since everyone but Skeeter is a healthy weight and not having any food - related problems. Skeeter is just really good at stealing food and treats from everyone else and hates to exercise. He and I both need to walk more! We are giving them a salmon-based dog food. Any thoughts on that? |

| Trust your gut if you feel something is not quite right. Now I am not going to say anyone is wrong because there are so many opinions but I have had several vets and pet care workers actually tell me that Bil Jac is no good. I also don't like that they told you to switch up food every few months because they aren't getting everything they need from one food. That makes no sense, why would you go for even a few days giving a dog a food that doesn't contain all they need??? Much less a few months. You could do searches in here and find many great opinions and then decide what works best for you, your dogs, your budget, schedule, etc. It will take some trial and error though. You probably won't figure it out right off the bat. Wookie is 3 and I still am not completely sure I am doing the best for him. I find out new things all the time. Hope that helps some!

| ok, my question is how do you know how much to feed them. 1/4 cup is for what weight dog? Sullie is 10 mths and 5 lbs. How much should I be feeding him. I actually started a thread today just on this ? Thanks Our vet suggests Science diet, which I don't use because of what I've read on here. |

| I was going to get Bil Jac too, but after reading others posts I realized it wasn't a good food. I usually leave the food out for mine all day, so they can nibble on it when their hungry.

| Thanks again for all the comments and advice. I may be looking for another new vet if this is any indication of her knowledge. I have another thread about her advice. As far as feeding goes I am sticking to what has been working and hoping we can cut down on Skeeter's "good boy" treats and get him to exercise more. Thanks again! |

| How much to feed an 8 week old puppy OK I see where a lot of adult dogs are only eating 1/4 cup of food per day. My puppy is 8 weeks old. About how much should I be feeding him per day? I am a new owner and want to do what is best for my baby. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Each food is different and there is a recommended amount on the bag, many vets recommend free feeding for smaller breed dogs such as yorkies, so having food out all day can keep them from experiencing hypoglycemia. You don't have to worry that a puppy will become overweight.

| I started to divide his 1/4 cup over three meals and he would lick his bowl clean and look around for more food. He now waits by the cupboard where all his food and treats are kept. I asked my vet and she showed me the back of the bag I was feeding him and it recommended 1/4 cup each feeding. This is all so confusing so I am going with the vets advice. We are also walking about 30 minutes a day on top of the running around he does on his own. Good luck fallingstar this new parenting business can be worrisome. |

| I've been giving my two a little over 1/4 c. a day and they are doing well with it. Adie leaves some most of the time and Skeeter has even been leaving his occasionally so I KNOW they are getting enough. They both look at me when I put their bowls down as if to say "is that it?" When I walk away the sniff each other's bowls then go back to their own and start eating. (Who says dogs don't have sense of fair play!) LOL |
