| Teeth Cleaning Scare My little one and I mean little -- that is all 2.10 lbs of her is due for her annual teeth cleaning. I am somewhat concerned because last time she had trouble when I brought her home. She was constantly making a throat sound which eventually stopped the following day. She is a rescue and needs to get her teeth cleaned. I believe I have a good Vet but I don't know what really happened to her last time. My Vet said that she had a bad reaction to the anesthesia. Has anyone experienced this with their Yorkies? Any guidance will help. Rawf! |

| I think the tube they put down her throat irritated her and thats why she has the throat problems. I dont know how you can avoid it from happening again though because they will have to do it

| I agree with Chachi. It is very normal for intubation to cause throat irritation. No worries there. However, what is this about her reacting to anesthesia? What kind was used? Will they be using something else this time? Is preop blood work going to be done? Is surgery done on a heated surface and an IV placed before surgery? Why does she need yearly cleanings? A lot of Yorkies have teeth problems but if they are maintained at home, usually that means less dentals. My Yorkie had severe periodontal disease. She had oral surgery and then another cleaning about 8 months later. It has been 16 months now and the vet said her teeth look awesome... Are you using anything like OraVet at home? Brushing daily?

| My Little Rescue Thank you for your response. She is very difficult for any form of grooming and teeth cleaning on a daily basis is even more difficult. She needs yearly cleaning and I believe that she did have a throat irritation. I wonder whether this is because she is so, but so small that the tube used may have been too big. I will speak to the Vet this time. Thanks again, Rawf! |

| Wow, this is why I love YorkieTalk. I was just searching because my 3 pound baby Willow is having her first cleaning March 11th, along with her older brother, and I am terrified. I am planning on having the pre-op blood work done for her and Biscuit (he's a 10 pounder), and she did fine when we got her spayed only weighing in a little over one pound...but this is a different vet and you just never know. She is very difficult to groom and such, due to her size and wiggle factor, but we do plan on adding teeth cleaning for her every day after this cleaning because I just do not want to put her under anesthesia any more than absolutely necessary. Any suggestions on special bloodwork requests I may need to make? Ellie May, what is your dental routine? Sorry ggzaro, I don't mean to highjack this thread, I am just worried sick about this....she's just so tiny! |
