| If she does try to take them off, you might want to put a baby onesie on over it. That will help it stay on and create another barrier. Quote:

| FWIW: an old trick used by goat herders who don't want the animals to breed ... they tie a towel around a buck's waist (using a piece of rope). When the buck stands up/"assumes the position", the towel falls into place (kinda looks like a loincloth) preventing penetration. When he's on all 4's, it just hangs straight down and doesn't interfere with other functions, like peeing. I used it once on my German Shepherd when a new rescue went into heat on us. HE was rather frustrated, but it worked like a charm. Of course, the best thing to do is get them all neutered as soon as you can. Bently can be "done" for less $$$ and more quickly ... maybe even on Monday. |

But even with a double barrier, from what I have heard, "where there is a will, they can find a way". So whatever you do, for the whole 3 weeks or so that she is in heat, DO NOT let them alone together..........even for a minute. Good luck to you....their whining, barking, & scratching to try to get to each other can get crazy & annoying after a while. I went through it myself last November.

| I agree about getting your male in sooner to get him fixed. Most vets charge a little more if your female is in heat when you get them spayed. But it can be done, it is more risky then too. But your male can be fixed now and then by the time he is all healed and good, she can go in...... then you only have to deal with the recovery of one at a time. |

| When I had my 3 spayed and neutered I purchased a certificate from the local shelter. It allowed me to pick a vet off the list of vets that participated in their program. I checked the participating vet list, did a little research and then picked the vet that I wanted to use. Check your local shelter to see if you have a program similar in your area. Also remember to have the vet check for any retained puppy teeth during the spay/neuter. They should be removed as well for your pups oral health. Yorkies have a tendency to retain teeth which causes decay over time. Bogey and Pebbles both had a few teeth removed and my vet didn't even charge extra for their teeth. If you need any help do not hesitate to ask and I will be willing to see if I could help you come up with assistance in your area.

| Yes, it is normal. she is trying to keep herself clean. You will really need to keep them seperated for the next few weeks. Believe me. diapers are nice and belly bands for the male... but when she is ready for the male they WILL get thru them. you wil need to keep them in seperate rooms with the doors closed between them Good luck

How Long Does the Heat Cycle Last in the Dog? The darker discharge is part of proestrus and then it will get lightly during estrus.

| To Be Continued... OMG! I am really starting to get stressed out about this whole situation. I called the Kansas Spay/Neuter clinic and it is a recording to leave a message I have left 2 and haven't heard anything back. I want to get Bentley done first that way he has time to heal before I get Sadie done, normally I would just take them to their regular very but they charge so much! Hopefully, I'll here back from the KSN place. Thanks for all of the advice everyone, I really do appreciate it. |

If they are done at the same time, it is possible that he won't try to play with her because he may be tired/down also after surgery.

I was just like you! Stressed! I was stressed about how long I waited to get her fixed, and she ended up going into heat. But don't worry, it will all be fine. You're are definitely doing everything you can, and that's all you can do. Just take a deep breath, and keep doing what you're doing. I think it lasts about 2 weeks, and then you won't have to deal with this again. I know you have a male too, so that's why you are stressed, but as long as they are separated when you can't watch them, then that's all you can do. You're doing everything right, so just take it one step at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself. It's a stressful situation, but freaking out about it won't help the situation. You're doing an amazing job, and your babies (or now should I say, "woman") are so lucky to have you as a mommy!! Keep it up!! It will work out!! I PROMISE!! | |

If you are not getting an answer from the clinic, I would just drop in during their business hours to speak to them directly. Places like that are always so overwhelmed and sometimes they just don't have the manpower to return all of their calls.

| Well I was just planning on doing Bentley first because Sadie is in heat right now, so I need to wait anyhow to get her done. I found out in the paper that our Spay Day is coming up on Feb 24th, and they will be doing Bentley's surgery for $40 so I'm excited. I was told that during Spay day they are not doing females?? But I found a place that will do her 6 wks after she comes out of heat for about $75 so still a pretty good price. Right now I'm just having a hard time dealing with my male, he's always barking, and panting, and whining, and following her around. He shakes, and is really high strung, that's not his usual self. He won't even poo when I take him out, he just pee's and then runs around the yard barking, pacing, and tracking. It's so frustrating! I take them outside seperate because she can't even go potty without him right there behind her, and she just seems so worn out by the whole thing. She usually plays and runs around with him, but since she's been in heat she just lays by us and wants nothing to do with him. |
