| Cat eats the dog food, dog eats the cat food! Anyway to putting a stop to this? My cat loves the dog food more than cat food. My dog loves cat food more than dog food. How can I put a stop to this? They are both so slick....they both do it as soon as I am not watching them. If my dog does not eat all of her food at one time (she likes to save some for later...even with small portions.)my cat will eat the remaining. The same goes for my dog, she will eat all of the cat food when I am not looking. I was thinking about moving the cat dish to someplace higher but that would mean I'd have to go out and buy one of those tower thingys for my cat. My cat has run of the house and since I live alone, I have a tendency to leave all of the doors open. So this basically means she finds the dog food. I've tried changing different brands of food for my cat but she will only eat one brand Iams (when she does eat cat food). I feed my dog wellness and I've tried the same brands I get my dog except for cats and she still prefers the dog food. It's getting to a point (with my cat) that she has almost completely stop eating her cat food. She's an indoor cat and the only time she goes outside is if I am taking her to the vet. Any suggestions..... Last edited by yavenay; 01-22-2009 at 05:32 AM. |

| Mine did and sometimes do the same thing lol! I ended up having to put the cat food up on their cat climbing tree. My cat still sneaks bites of the dog food on occasion. Are you able to change the cat food? Maybe your cats will start eating it if it is a different flavor

| Also, when I first brought Brandi home, she was very protective of her food, she would growl at my cat if she came anywhere near her food. I didn't want Brandi to become aggressive with my cat in anyway including feeding time. So I put a stop to this and now Brandi just watches my cat eat all of her food. I guess for me the big thing is if this can harm either of them in anyway. I will probably have to go and get a cat tree and that would put a stop to Brandi eating Zoey's food, but how do I stop Zoey (the cat) from eating all of the dog food? | It would probably be best to put the cat food up higher even if you have to go buy a tower to do it. You can always schedule feed the Yorkie and make the cat stay out of the room while she is eating. Brandi probably likes the cat food because it is higher in fat. It is okay for some dogs but too much fat for others can trigger pancreatitis. It is very unhealthy for the cat to eat the dog food because most of it lacks taurine which cats have to have.

| I don't free feed my dogs and cats. Supervised feeding all at the same time prevents most of the nibble issues! I also feed my dogs in a gated off room so they can't get to the cat food.

| I've always put the cat food on higher ground. It kept my shih-tzu from eating it. My cat only went as far as sniffing the dog food but never tried eating it after I've discouraged such habits from the very beginning. That was the case until now. The cat seems to be in that age where she cares a LOT more about food and likes whatever the puppy's having. She really hates the new food (Wellness) we got her to mix in with her old food (Science Diet Hairball Light) as she picks out the newer stuff to toss aside but she eats it eventually when there's none of her old food left, however reluctantly. It has worked out for us putting her food bowl on the bathroom counter (I think it's better for cleanup than floors anyway especially when she drops crumbs off to the side all the time and splashes her water). We've also placed it on bookshelves at a reasonable height and also on a little table in the kitchen that's used for misc. things. She knows not to jump on countertops though she does it in the middle of the night when she thinks no one's looking. I've been keeping the puppy food within view of where I am in the house and eventually it just ended up staying in my room since I've also taught the cat not to enter the one bedroom (so she'd only sneak in when I forget to close the door when we're not around or I'm in the shower). This has kept her from dipping her paws and leaving her fur and litter behind in the dog's water. |

| I have heard that cat food is bad for dogs . Keep the cat food up high and out of reach of your puppy. Then I would schedule feedings for your dog, and supervise the dog when eating.

| We have a cat that is 11 years old and she has been eating dog food her whole life. I know it is better for her to eat cat food but she doesnt see it that way. We have talked to her vet and he has her on some vitamins. She is a very healthy cat. I know this most likely doesnt help but its what we had to do.
