Thor's Human Donating Member | Should you always express the anal glands? Thor's former owner always got his anal glands expressed when he was groomed. Is this necessary? It seems like it would be pretty unpleasant, so if he doesn't need to have it done, I'm not going to. I know a "fishy" smell is a sign it's needed, and while I have not really stuck my nose in his buttal area, I don't smell any fish. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | In the buttal area, lol, that's a new one! Well, not all dogs have the fishy smell, I never noticed an odor coming from Joey, but he would do the butt scooting with a pained look on his face. This use to be a common procedure when grooming, but many vets say that if they don't need it, don't do it. Most dogs can empty the glands by themselves, and adding fiber to the diet seems to help some dogs. If they need to be expressed there may be a slight puffiness around the "buttal area". I think it best to have a vet show you how to express them, if done wrong, the contents can be pushed further up the canal, and cause impacted glands. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

| LOL!!!! I love it- "buttal area" Oh, and I agree with Nancy. It is really important that if you do it, it needs to be done correctly.

Dog's should be able to express their anal glands on their own when they are frightened, or just a natural thing, sometimes dogs cant do it. When they scoot their bottom on the floor, its usually a sign that they need them expressed. When you get your baby groomed, i would ask the groomer if they do it internally or externally- there are 2 different ways of expressing the anal glands! If you get it done to much it can cause problems...and yes, the smell is wicked!
