In the buttal area, lol, that's a new one! Well, not all dogs have the fishy smell, I never noticed an odor coming from Joey, but he would do the butt scooting with a pained look on his face. This use to be a common procedure when grooming, but many vets say that if they don't need it, don't do it. Most dogs can empty the glands by themselves, and adding fiber to the diet seems to help some dogs. If they need to be expressed there may be a slight puffiness around the "buttal area". I think it best to have a vet show you how to express them, if done wrong, the contents can be pushed further up the canal, and cause impacted glands. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
