| Which grainless?? Hi Everyone... I gotta say I LOVE this website!! I think b/c I love my Snickers so much!! Haha, anyway, I want to rotate a grainless food into Snickers' diet and am asking which grainless you all recommend. Its going to be either: Wellness CORE, Innova EVO, Nature's Vairety Instinct-Chicken, or Orijen. Which of these have your babies been successful on and which have good SMALL BITES (I know Innova EVO has a small bites option) for Snicks tiny little mouth?? Wellness Super5 was way too big for him and he didn't like it. Thanks- Viv ps...I hope to get him something tonight, hopefully I can get some repsonses by then??? |

| We feed Wellness Core and love it! The only problem is that the kibble is not small.. it's a lot smaller now than it was when it first came out but I'm pretty sure it's still considered "big". Mine do fine on it but they're a little bit bigger so... Good luck! ALL of those foods are great so you'll end up with a high quality food either way.

| None of my five liked the Wellness Core but they will eat the Nature's Variety Instinct and it is small kibble!

| I feed NV's Instinct and my babies like it. My 4 pounder has no problems at all with the kibble size - it's not tiny but still small enough. I'd like to try Orijen but no one carries it locally.

| I'm wondering why you want to rotate grainless into the diet? Mine are on grainless, as it appeared they were having allergy problems, but some people doubt the value of the grainless diet if it is not needed. Mine have been on Merrick's Before Grain - we use the Buffalo Chicken. Remember if you go grainless that you need to add water to the dry food

| Thanks for asking....Snickers actually still has the itchies and also some ear problems (skin flaking). I hear that switching to grainless can help with this. Is this a good enough reason to switch? I also hear it is the most healthy for dogs. Please let me know. -Viv |

| It sounds like grain-free could help with your dog's allergies. Grain-free food is healthy and can be fed whether or not there is a "problem". I feed grain-free food simply because dogs were never meant to eat grains in the wild. They are carnivores and are meant to eat high protein food full of meat. Right now, raw is not feasible for my lifestyle so we do the best we can. Also, grains are big sources of allergies and itching in dogs. Also, I've never heard that you need to add water. Out of curiosity, why would you need to do that?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Those are good choices. My favorite is Orijen - I have more repect for this kibble company than almost any other. I also like Natures Variety, CORE, and Innova is good too.

| We feed Nature'sVariety chicken to our pups, and they really like it. The bites are very small. It is one of the only kibbles that they won't eventuallly get sick of. Plus, you can rotate with the duck and I think they have rabbit too.

Really check for grain-free. The regular Innova is not grain-free - and that is really what I like to feed, but mine were chewing on their paws with it.

Grain can be an allergen.. you need to give it a good 30 days before you say for sure that the grain is out of his system... you might also try adding omegas and vit E to his diet for the dry flakey skin. Hope the change helps- i hate when our little guys itch! Also- try to stay away from chicken- it can be an allergen... Layla is SO allergic to chicken.. even if a treat has it in it she is affected. | |

| Thanks everyone...really appreciate all the feedback... It's narrowed down to NV Instinct, or Innova Evo...but now Merrick's Before Grain is there too!! Geez...this is too hard!! Right now Snick is on Merrick's Puppy Plate and likes it, so maybe BG would be good?? Like I said...too difficult...it's like choosing a food for a real baby!! He is my baby, who am I kidding?? lol -Viv |

| Not to add more confusion but I Love Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish I tried 5 others and not with as good as results. Now no more itching, no more runny eyes not like they were..... no more funny stools and her hair is not breaking off or splitting, Oh and she finally has some shine in her coat. The only thing that concerned me about was natural balance was it is a larger kibble. However it is flat and none of my dogs have had choking problems on it you can break it with your hands. Hope this helps..... Best Wishes!!!!!!

I like some of the ingredients in it - first off - several different meat sources - buffalo, chicken, turkey, salmon and venison - although, a couple are meal. I also like that there are blueberries and the acai berry that everyone is raving about lately. I also like that it is lower in protein than some of the grain-free foods - it has 32% protein. (There are grain frees with even lower protein like the Natural Balance products) One of the things I like about the BG also is the bag -- all pet food should be sold this way! It's a zip lock bag Not to complicate things for you - but I think the other great grain-free food to consider is Artemis- Fresh Mix Maximal Dog. I love the Artemis foods - their cat food is about the only thing my nearly 17 yr old Siamese can keep down. My problem is Artemis is very hard to come by where I live - one groomer carries it, I don't like her much, she over charges & she keeps very irregular shop hours. Also, a holistic vet carries it - but she is only open a few hours a week. The downfalls I see with the Artemis grain-free is that the only meat source is chicken & again it's higher in protein at 42%. You might find this website helpful - when looking at grain-free or alternative foods The Dog Food Project - Grain Free Dog Foods
