| there is a risk anytime we put our babies "under" i know i need to get my kids teeth cleaned and i am dreading it for this reason! i panicked all day when miss buffey and bentley got spayed and neutered however, there are also health risks for our little ones if we do NOT get them clean...i do not want to tell you any horror stories, because i do not want to think about it lol

| yes there are risks everytime. Hardly ever does a dog die during neutering but mine did. Now i have a yorkie who is almost a year and needs retained teeth pulled but im very very scared but i know it has to be done. I have switched vets since skoshi passed. But its still scary especially when you have been through it once.

with any type of surgery there is poetinally a risk, but thats why they do blood work first, to determine if they can handle it or not. I used to be a vet tech, and dentals can be a very long process, and they are under for awhile...if it is a simple teeth cleaning, they wont be under that long.. are your dogs teeth really that bad? the one vet i worked for, i swear, they would say teeth cleaning to EVERY client, just to get more money from them, since they are pricey!

| Rocky's teeth are also really bad and he has to get them cleaned as well, but i am afraid of putting him under. This vet that he goes to now is different from the one that nuetered him. Although ive never had a problem with this new vet but then again he's never been under at this place.

| Having a baby under general anesthesia is scary - but both of ours had dental cleaning recently and both of them did very well. Still a little groggy when we first brought them back home, but fine other than that. My biggest porblem was that on our older pup they cut the hair on her foreleg very short all the way around the leg and in a band about 2" wide in order to insert an IV. I guess the trimming was necessary because of the thickness of her coat, but it looks like it will take months for it to grow out. I promised myself I'd start brushing their teeth myself so I could put off the next vet cleaning as long as possible, but it isn't happening - yet. By the way - it is amazing how close our two are. They went in at different times, and each time the one left at home was completely lost and dejected all day until her sister came back. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I had Pixie's teeth cleaned and 5 pulled in July. She is 3 years old and just under 4 lbs. Her teeth and she did great!!! My vet put her on antibiotics 5 days prior and after since her gums were badly infected. I took her in at 8 and the vet called about 1 1/2 hours later saying she did fine and I could pick her up in the afternoon. When I got her home she immediatley got hold of a hoove and started chewing on it, of course I took it away. But she was fine and ate and played like nothing happened. I did have blood work done prior as I always do when any of mine have to go under. Her breath was so nice and fresh. I do think I will have to do this yearly as she must be genetically predisposed to bad teeth and gums. It was such a relief to have it done and know she would feel much better.

I brush his teeth every other day, i tried the petzlife and that other thing you put in the water nothing helps. He has brown stains on his teeth i have a regular one sided tooth brush and a three headed toothbrush. He bleeds when i brush his teeth because he absolutley hates it moves and squirms but i brush because i dont stop brushing. He only eats dry food which i heard it's better for their teeth and he has those rope toys and bones. But his teeth are still bad so its a professional cleaning that he needs.

Yorkie Yakker | when my yorkie had his teeth cleaned, they didn't put him under they just gave him a tranquilizer and he was fine. he has such bad teeth and he won't let us brush them and he refuses to chew on bones or any other toys that would help his teeth |

| I started brushing Buddy's teeth the week I brought him home at 14 1/2 wks and have been faithful for 4 1/2 yrs and it has paid off. For those of you with puppies, please start this practice right away. Your puppy will get use to it. I say let's brush your teeth Buddy and he jumps up on the chair for me. I also use petzlife once or twice a week as an additional maintenance. He has no tartar. His gums are a nice dark pink and his teeth are as white as the snow. He will be 5 in Jan. I try and tell everyone about brushing when I see a thread like this. No way do I want him to go under. The vet said he never saw a dog with teeth like Buddy's in all his years of practice. He is also a chewer and only get's natrual white bones to chew on. Don't give up. You are doing the best thing for your puppy by keeping his teeth clean and his gums healthy. It's a known fact that Yorkies loose their teeth at an early age if not properly cared for. I read that in a book before I got Buddy that's how I knew what to do. I use four paws original toothpaste only. It's works if you are consistant. Happy brushing. Last edited by ARCHIE; 12-09-2008 at 01:00 PM. |

| I am worried about teeth cleaning and going under for my little guy......but can one of you tell me what you paid for teeth cleaning......I understand that this is pricey too and costs may vary depending on the vet......but so that I have an idea would be very helpful.....

| Just a comforting thought, I remember about a month ago reading an article that in California and Florida vets are now doing dentals without putting the dogs under unless they absolutely can't do it any other way. So I'm really hoping this will catch on, so that we don't have to put our dogs under. I've also heard that chlorophyll is helpful for teeth, but I know that some dogs are just prone to more dental issues. |

| I hate the idea of having to put keely under for any reason, there fore i have been brushing her teeth EVERY day to ensure i wont need to get this procedure done very often. I think i will get them done when she turns 5 to ensure she has healthy teeth and then we'll see what needs to be done in the future.. I wish you and your pup the best of luck! And i am glad you are taking care of his teeth! |
