| HELP!!!!! scratching and gnawing Macy is is scratching and gnawing at her back, back legs and bottom. She has done this to the point of having no hair there. We feed her beneful wet & dry food and give her beneful treats. This has happened in the past and the vet will give her a shot and it helps for a while, but I need to know how to keep this from happening over & over. We know she has allergies to fleas, so she is sprayed with Adams spray. I bathe her with oatmeal shampoo once a week. Could nerves be part of this? There's been some tension in the house lately. I'm at my wits end. I'll try just about anything to keep my baby well. |

Don't bathe her as often- try to make it every 2-3 weeks. The bath dries her skin out. If she is having a particularily difficult day- you can use Children's liquid dye free benedryl to take the edge off- don't use it regularly or it will loose its effectiveness- the benedryl might make her drowsy as well. But you NEED to change the food to see a difference. | |

| I hate to sound rude but DO NOT FEED ANY THING MADE BY PURINA!!!!!!!!!!! I could go on for an hour about how mad I am that vets still tell people that purina is good food IT IS NOT!!!!!!!!!! Your dog probably has a grain allergy. Go to this site and look up the food you feed than look up the 4,5,6 star food and decide on a food with no wheat, soy, corn, beet pulp, or chicken which I assume is the only meat in beneful. I used to feed my lab Purina. Pm me if you would like to know what it did to him. here's the site: Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost There is alot of info on dog food on the web and this is the perfect place to start!! |

| we have an allergy yorkie for 4 years and go to dermatologist and have done it all -- usually back half is flea allergy so if she is not itching her face and rubbing face and chewing paws my guess would be this is flea related -one flea bite can cause an allergy dog to itch up to 3 weeks below is a ton of info on allergies so i would read up on it as it can be very frustrating. Search Results for allergies with environmental allergies it is good to bath weekly but oatmeal shampoo surprisingly most allergy dogs are allergic to it and it is very drying so best to use a hypoallergenic shampoo and my favorite is earthbath hypoallergenic. If your dog is an adult dog and showing signs of allergies i would put on natural balance fish and sweet potato as it is a good food and the less ingredients in a food the better as their system gets over loaded but food allergy is only 10% of the time and 90% of it is environmental. If your dog stops itching when giving steroids it is not food as steroids and atopica will not stop a dog from itching if it is food related and it is a real test to see if food or not |

| also a great group for allergies is allerdog@yahoogroups.com -- I found that yahoogroups.com have helped a ton when you have a dog with an illness as these owners deal with the same thing as you and it is great to get others experiences and ideas to help your dog and discuss with your vet |

| I don't care for Beneful either but I don't think that's your problem - I feed Maggie Wellness and she has been itching since May. She makes herself absolutely sick over it with all the scratching and biting she's doing - no hair on her back legs and sides of her tummy because of all the scratching. The only thing that's worked was the steroid shot so I know it's not nerves or anxiety. We've tried EVERYTHING!!! I feel your frustration!!!

YT 3000 Club Member | You can bathe them in regular dawn dish soap for fleas. I use a flea comb on chester frequently, and I use salmon oil on his wet food good for the itchies as well. I have also used some stuff called buddy boo boo with natural stuff in it and it helps unless its really bad then dont use it. Benefel first ingredient is corn I think, yucky stuff. |
