| New Yorkie Owner needs advice.... Hi, I am new to this site and new to owning a yorkie... I adopted a female yorkie from a soldier about 2 weeks ago she weighs a little over 4lbs and I was told that she was a little over a year old when we got her. As any new pet owner I took her to the vet to have her checked out just for good cause, and to my surprise when the vet opened her mouth she had lots and lots of tarter on her teeth, that led the vet to think she was more like 2 to 3 years old. Another reason I took her in to see the vet was because she was very swollen on her bottom, and her boobies were pretty enlarged. The people who we adopted Pixie from had a new litter of yorkie pups so I kind of wanted to make sure that she herself wasnt pregnate from from the daddy of the pups since she is not fixed. The vet felt around and said that she was pretty swollen in her bottom but could have been from either coming into heat or coming out of heat, he didnt feel that she was pregnate at that time (2 weeks ago). Being new to the Yorkie breed I have alot of questions for anyone who can help me... 1. She seems constipated (takes forever to poo, and then poos a small amount)... what do I do? 2. She sleeps all the time... Is that normal?? 3. Boobies are very large, she has never had puppies.. could she be pregnate, and what signs should I be watching for?? 4. Bottom is pretty swollen (no discarge) 5. Not really eating... What brand of food do you recomend?? 6. Exteamlly bad breath 7. Scratches her face by her nose and mouth off and on (thought maybe she had a sticker or something in her face, but cant find anything) Anyone who can answer any of the questions above would be a great help, I have no clue on dealing with this cute little dog! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Congratulations on your new baby. My Pixie had terrible teeth and gums by 1 1.2 years so maybe your Pixie has the same problem. Her breath was horrible and her gums were bad. I had her dental done in June and her teeth and gims were 100 times better. No bad breath, I now clean them daily or every other day. It is possible she is going on or out of heat. My Roxie came into heat before her spay appointment and her boobies have stayed big still and she was in heat in June and spayed in August. I don't know if they ever will go down! When any of mine were in heat they did sleep alot. I don't know anything about pregnant dogs so hopefully someone will come on who can help you there. What are you feeding her now? Make sure it is a high quality food like Canadae, Wellness etc. That may help the constipation issue, if not ask the vet what to give her. Keep us posted!

| Thank you for your post, she is eating a cheap brand of dog food from Albertsons... the previous owner had her on Maxximum nutrition from Walmart, well needless to say when we picked her up it was pretty late so we just stopped at Albertsons and found a bag of puppy food... I got her the food that the owner had been giving her, but she wouldnt eat it, but seemed to eat the new food... now shes not eating the new one either??? |

| First let me say...she is adorable! Now I gotta tell you, if she becomes too much for you..I'll send you my address. Next..Spend the money & get her a really good food. These pups don't eat much so a bag will go a long way. Ask the people here about food, they have them & know best. Don't ask your vet...mine had my boys on Science Diet. How much pumpkin? |

| Congrats on your new baby! Adorable! Regarding the pumpkin, buy canned pumpkin - 100% pure pumpkin - NOT the pumpkin pie mix. You can give a few big spoonfuls. I reccomend keeping a few cans of this on hand, as it will help with any constipation/diarrhea from anxiety from the transition. You can also use some pumpkin to help your new dog's tummy with the food transition. Its going to take a few weeks for her stools to normalize - don't worry - this is normal! OK - as for food - no offense to LoveFla - but please don't feed Science Diet. if you want to feed kibble, Candidae, Wellness, California Naturals, Innova, Evo, Nature's Logic, Orijen and Solid Gold are really high quality kibbles... Regarding her teeth, I would have her get a full dental cleaning at the vet's and then make sure you provide her with lots of chewy toys and brush her teeth regularly. Keep us up to date on the transition!

| problems with new pup hi there sory to hear of your problems. if your vet has checked her out it should not be too serious. however the problems with the bowel movement and diet could be quite serious especially as you do not know your puppies history, please be aware of liver shunt which can cause problems as you discribe and also lead to dietary problems, try a low protein diet as this could help.if you have contact with the previous owner ask them. also if they had your baby insured and have the pedigree you could follow this up as this illness is caused by inbreeding. i hope this is not the case as i have 2 yorkies and have owned 4 all together and they are beautiful pets. let me know as i am a concerned fuzby owner pauline |
