| Gizmo's grooming and staph infection Hi Everyone! It's been a busy time for us lately, and I haven't been on YT much, but I try to pop in once a week or so for a few minutes at least. I miss you all. We have some good things going on. My oldest son is getting married on Dec. 6th and it's mostly a DIY wedding, so I'm helping where I can. And some bad things going on. John (my husband) has received a possible diagnosis of progressive MS. We're still in the evaluation phase, but at least we have some answers to what's going on and can begin putting together a treatment plan. Anyway, our biggest challenge lately has been with Gizmo. He's now a year and a half old and a precious joy for us. We thank God every day for bringing him into our lives. Lately, we've felt like his grooming had been neglected due to everything going on, so we scheduled a full groom for him about a week and a half ago at a groomer I have recommended on YT in the past. They have always done a great job with him. This time there was a problem. When we picked him up he was lethargic and just "out of it". He slept a lot and didn't want to be touched. This is very unusual behavior for him. This lasted for a day or so and he started to bounce back. We were just beginning to breathe a little easier when he started getting bumps all over his body. They were little bumps that didn't look too red, but obviously itched badly. I bathed him in a hypoallergenic shampoo and put on a lot of conditioner. That seemed to help him but only for a day or so. John took him to the vet the next day. Here's the disturbing part. As soon as the vet's assistant heard that he had just recently been groomed, she said, "Oh, let me give you the name of a different groomer." This was alarming because this vet's office recommended the groomer we used. John asked if there had been other reports of problems with the groomer and she said, "Yes" but wouldn't go into any details. The vet then examined Gizmo and said that he had a staph infection possibly caused by an allergic reaction to something the groomer used like a shampoo. Luckily, we caught it early. He gave us antibiotics for him along with prednisone for the itching. He's healing well now. Most of the scabs have dried up and are coming off on their own. He's not itching anymore. Obviously, we are NOT returning to that groomer. Not because we can prove they actually did anything wrong, but just because of our "gut" feeling. If you live in Waco and would like to know the name of our groomer, please ask and I will gladly let you know. Here's my question. How long should we wait to bathe him? I've even avoiding brushing him because I didn't want to disturb the healing sores. Has anyone had an experience like this? How do we do the followup care for him now that he is healing? Thank you in advance.

| Judy, it is good to "see" you - I have missed you. First of all, I am so very sorry to hear that John has yet another challenge to face. I know with your love, a good medical team, and most importantly the help of the Great Healer, John's diagnosis will come soon so that an aggressive treatment plan can be established. Please let John know that he will remain in my thoughts and prayers . I am so very sorry to hear about Gizmo's bad grooming experience. It is so scary - with all of the product recalls, it's hard to have confidence even in someone who is a "regular" part of your baby's health/grooming care. And the wedding... I know that the proud mom and dad are very busy doing all they can to assure the happy couple gets off to the best possible start. I can't wait for the wedding pics. |

Do you think it's okay to brush him now? With a soft brush? How long do I wait to give him a bath?

| Judy, I wish I could answer, but I haven't had any experience with staff. Just the thought of it is horrible. If it were me, though, not knowing any better, I would wait until he is completely healed to do anything to his coat. I would imagine that if you burst the little bumps the staff could spread..... I hope someone who has some experience with staff replies. |

I agree, from what I understand, a staph infection could turn into MRSA. I am so sorry that you have so much on your plate. Good to see you back, lots of prayers for you.

| Thank you. That was what I thought, but then I started to feel guilty for not brushing him every day. So, I'll just let it wait a while longer before I start to brush him again.

I hope we will see and hear from you as often as possible. You and John and Gizmo will be in our prayers. You certainly have a lot on your plate right now. I hear there are some amazing things they are finding with leukemia drugs that are seeming to reverse MS symptoms. I hope there is a something that will help soon! Hugs

| You might want to contact the groomer and find out what products they used. Maybe they are using some new shampoo or conditioner. It would be good to know what not to let the next groomer use.

| Judy, so happy to "see" you once again!!! Positive thoughts coming your way for John...I sincerely wish him well. Congrats on the upcoming wedding...how very exciting for you all. Gizmo...staph, huh? Wonder if the groomer's equipment wasn't properly sterilized...especially the clippers. I've heard of this happening before. I'm glad to hear he is improving...MRSA is a resistant strain...often seen from over use of antibiotics. Doctor's have been warning patients of this for years...but people still want to take an antibiotic for every little sniffle or symptom. I certainly hope his infection isn't MRSA, very difficult to treat. Sending get well wishes from Winston and I and soon!!!

| Judy, sounds like your plate has been full lately. First, I hope you get a good report on your dh. Second, congratulations on your son's wedding, I'm sure it will be beautiful. Third, I hate to hear that about Gizmo, we have had issues with staph before and the vet prescribed Sulf Oxy Dex shampoo which is a (antimicrobial, antiseborrheic, cleansing, moisturizing formulation). I don't quite understand the moisturizing part because it's very drying. I lather her up making sure I get down to her skin, wrap her in a warm towel and wait 10 min, then rinse and use John Paul Oatmeal conditioner so I can get a comb through her hair otherwise it would be impossible. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers |
