I think the vet was being kind as a staph infection is serious and certainly not caused by an allergic reaction to a shampoo - especially so quickly. It is more likely the facility or their grooming articles are not sterile and poor Gizmo got knicked during the process. Hopefully it will clear up immediately and you won't have any further problems with him.
