The Whole Dog Journal ( magazine) every year rates dog food both dry, canned and even some raw. They have a intresting rating system.
They also explain why things are rated as they are.

You can get back copies on line.

NOW, is that true? I did try Nature's Abundance and My Suzi would not touch that one. Then I gave her By nature , and it has none of none of the fillers... or any bad stuff. It is rated as A 4 and some of their canned foods are at A 6.
I gave my Suzi The canned and she ended up having gas badly. NOW, if i am niot correct on the super prem. foods , then please help clarify it, thank you
sorry to break it to ya.. but you are wrong High protein is ideal. Historically dogs were carnivores. Foods that list a filler (corn, wheat) as #1 or 2 ingredient are not a good food. Unless your pup has liver issues, the higher the protein the better. I home cook for Layla and 90% of her diet is protein. Those who feed raw... i woudl say are almost 100% protein and all of these dogs thrive on their diet!

Default Changing Foods Again !

Over many years, in the past, I have used Eukanuba without realizing how the main company operated & how low the quality of ingredients was, as well as Science Diet & Purina brands. Once you start researching, you'll know which foods are really crap!!

I have experienced recently that some brands often change the mill where they make their food & by doing this, their ingredients/quality changes. I was using Timber Wolf & this has happened with them. Some places here in Vegas have stopped carrying their food because T.W. is not up front with what is happening.

I have researched & looked, and am in process of changing the girls food. I doubt I will ever stop researching.......

I am having the same problems here ...when you dig into the research on these foods you surely do not want to use them.
I was feeding Royal Canin Yorkshire #28 for several years until Wolf's blood test came back last year with some elevated liver values. I got very upset and started checking and find that many say RC is just to rich. So I changed foods, and after several failures settled on Natural Balance small bites.
Wolf had his yearly physical last month and all blood tests were perfectly normal. Phew.
My biggest problem is my Oliver a/k/a diarrhea dog dosent always do well on changed foods.
I am wondering, since I give all my dogs chopped cooked chicken breast every night and free feed kibble if perhaps I should mix 2 different brands of kibble together rather then staying with the one ?
Has anyone done this ? Pros ? Cons ?

Oh and can I say Iams and therefore Eukanuba just got busted again for inhuman treatment of the dogs they using in feed testing trials... and did I say again.

JL

I am glad you brought this up. I was just getting ready to. I have seen a video showing the inhumane treatment by Iams and it wasn't pretty. All you have to do is google IAMS animal testing. You should get plenty of info. IAMS could be the best food out there and I still wouldn't use it. Here is a link that will give you some info.

Sorry to break it to you not all dogs can handle high protien do to the inability to process it...... bad breeding??

Also aggresive dogs at least some if not all need low protien.

well i'm pretty sure she was asking about a normal healthy dog.. she didn't mention that her dog had issues... so in that case.. yes.. high protein is just fine. And i did mention if her dog had liver issues that high protein is not necessary but thanks for bringing it up again....

I do something simular. In separate bowls, daily, I feed alittle Three Dog Bakery Entree for Dogs Chicken, carrots, greenbean & rice. Then the kibble, in bowl 1 - I have the Timber Wolf (phasing out) and bowl 2 I have Now! adult food (phasing in)

After the food recall, because the only food I was feeding Lucy then changed their formula & Lucy would NOT eat it, I had to scramble around trying to find a replacement that was not on the recall list & that she would eat. I have pretty much have decided that I would feed 2 or 3 different foods daily. I rotate one kibble & have the other kibble as the main one.
Their poo stays consistent...

By different readings, I choose not to get a food with to high of protein because Pebbles is still under 1 year old. The new kibble I picked is Crude Protein (minimum) 26%, where some others are as high as (minimum) 42%. The brand - Now! Adult Food is good for what I was looking for & the girls really like it. I consider it a Prem food.

You are very correct in this statement. For some dogs, the common go-to 'high end' food are not an option, for whatever reason. When that is the case, you have to do the best you can and make sure that the dog is getting the proper nutrition that he/she needs one way or another.

my Suzi is under A year old too, and it is in the super prem. rating scales, that says that it is not good for a puppy to eat something so high in protein that it can cause problems.
I could have seen it wrong, and thaqt is why I askde in here. i too, want to feed A high quality kibble to my Yorkie. she is getting one as of now, that has not fillers, or any of the bad . But, it rated as a 4 . SO if it is safe to give her a 5-6 food, as a puppy I am want to.
I am thinking of the Chicken Soup for the Puppy .I found out that it is sold in my area too. This is A better choice, then the By nature? Kibble?
I am still learning too and any suggestions to lead me to the better, foods is apreciated.
Thanks.

I think the issues with the high protein for puppies is that the fat isn't in balance, and from what i've read puppies need a certain amount of fat that perhaps other dogs don't need once they are fully developed. I'd stay away from an adult food for a puppy and stick with a quality puppy food or "all stages" food. Chicken soup is a good food!

Well here's a different twist to feeding. I'm feeding Nature's Variety raw Venison mixed with 1 tsp Wellness canned venison. They are both high high protein and good no grain foods. My dogs are sooo healthy, and they absolutely love it.
