I just found out that my yorkie Juno has colitis, she is 4 1/5 months old. I feel so bad for her. Me and my vet are trying new food and fibre. Its been almost three weeks and she still has episodes. No vomiting though. She is very active and happy but the days that she has a bad tummy she does alot of laying around. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, or stories to share with me.

I don't have any personal experience with colitis. I know one member here...Patti....has one who suffered from it. I believe she is controlling it with by diet and I don't think her dogs have suffered an episode in quite a while.

You may want to send her a pm or do a search...I'm sure you'll find loads of information about it.

My Marcel had what was diagnosed as ibd/ibs/colitis (i.e. the digestive mystery umbrella) after he had giardia as a pup. He had mushy/bloody/mucousy/jelly/diarrhea poos for 4-5 months - and I spend hundreds and hundreds at the vet, to no avail. Finally, an animal nutritionist (phone consult) set us on the right path and 1.5 days later we had a firm poo. I kid you not. I cried when I saw that poo .

Anyway - did your baby have giardia - or did anything precipitate his current issues? What were you feeding prior to this? Does her tummy make terrible gurgly noises?

Also, once you see this - I'll move this thread to the Health/Diet forum so it doesn't get "buried".

I'm soooo new at this. It will take me a while to get my barings straight. It seems that she has the problem everysecond day or so. I'm feeding her medi cal right now. She likes it. Her tummy makes the most awful sounds. Yellow/mucus/and a tiny bit of blood. Every other day her poops are what I seem to think as normal. She went 4 days doing fine. Then back at it. Some sites of read say it could be related to stress. But this problem does not occur at stressful moments. She is way to happy and layed back to be stressed. I'm sure its allergies as well. Her skin is really dry and she sometimes chews her feet. Ive been reading alot on the internet, and I think I might mention Tylon powder. Maybe that would be something to try.

My pom has it and I have her on a very strict diet of dog food and one treat. She is also on a medicine everyday and that has pretty much controlled it, but she is 11 1/2 years old your vet may not want a young dog on meds. With Maya she has so many other conditions that we just try and treat her symptoms to keep her comfortable. Work with your vet or an internal medicine doctor. Also probiotics are helpful. Keep us posted.

Which Medi Cal are you feeding? It could be as simple as an allergy to one of the ingredients. Personally, I wouldn't add Tylan powder (or any meds) until you first try some diet elimination strategies (if your vet thinks your dog is medically stable). It can really be as simple as diet . The paw licking/chewing is a sign of allergies as well. And, fiber and probios are an option eventually too.

Have they done fecal tests then? Did she ever had giardia or anything?
