| Itchy swollen eyerims? Rusty has a new issue. Itchy, swollen eyerims where they used to be black, they are now pink... Sometimes he has a small yellow discharge. I rushed him to the vet, and he said it was allergies. Sigh. Perscribed liquid children's benadryl 3 times a day. I just switched Rusty over to Wellness kibble about 2 and a half weeks ago....Anyone else think it could be the Wellness kibble? So far, Royal Canin is out because it causes itchy skin. Chicken Soup is out, same issue as Royal Canin. Rusty is picky, and he will starve before he eats something he does not like. What am I going to do with him? Heavy sigh....

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Did the vet say why he didn't think it was conjunctivitis? Was it bc it wasn't green and bc it was odorless? Could be seasonal too (sigh). Have you checked pollen.com for your area?

| His vet looked at it and said it appeared that he had no diseases or injuries and it was just allergies; no, I haven't checked the pollen count lately. Rusty even hates the liquid Benadryl.........it is a fight to get some in his mouth with a syringe the vet gave me...

| Yes, it started with the food switch........I have found some complaints about Wellness, some doggies just do not tolerate it. I found this pearl of wisdom on another website "People need to realize that not all pets tolerate "good" things in foods and that's why their pets can become ill. A lot of good quality foods including Wellness can be too rich for some pets which cause itching, loose stool, vomiting and diarrhea. Also when switching to a new food you must gradually make the change and not just switch them immediately over. In the past I tried Chicken Soup and Natural Balance and my pets had issues and refused to eat the food."

If it started with the food switch, I would suspect that, it is true that switching food too fast can cause tummy upsets, these will usually go away, after a couple of days, allergies on the other hand, usually don't go away, and often get worse. I'm not familiar with the ingredients of Wellness, but maybe it contains something that he's sensitive to. When testing for food allergies in humans, doctors require you to keep a food dairy and start with one or two foods, and add a new food each day/week and write any symptoms. For example, you could fed chicken and rice, and see after a day or two if the eyes get any better or remained the same.

| Thanks! I am still determining what he is allergic to.... he will not eat rice. He is very picky about his food. The vet said to clean his eyes with a washcloth is cold water because cold water quiets an itch while warm water aggravates it.

| Did your vet check to make sure he is producing tears? Dry eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca or "KCS") has those symptoms, irritated eyelids and a thick discharge that looks like an infection. Lady was diagnosed with KCS about a year ago and I thought she had conjunctivitis. |

Joey wouldn't eat the rice either and just picked out the chicken. I know he'll eat green beans, the frozen kind, and he loves those. I was just trying to think of something he could eat for a couple of days to rule out food allergies. The problem does seem worse than what a food allergy would do, but since you thought it happened at the same time, I thought it might be wise to test. Ladymom's suggestion is a good one, as well as Wylie's Mom, I know my eyes get worse as the pollen count goes up.

| Inhalant allergies are much more common in dogs than food allergies. He may be allergic to something in his environment. It's important to rule out dry eye, though. Lady has it and gets eye drops to stimulate tear production. It's an easy fix. Left untreated it can lead to blindness. |

What in creation is "richness"? And how, exactly, does "richness" cause allergies, and digestive issues when we have no real definition of what richness is, physiologically? I think it's careless to use terms like this to judge foods, when they truly have absolutely no meaning. Frosting is "rich", meaning - it tastes rich; where rich serves as a verb. So then, a rich tasting food causes loose stools and allergies? To me, this is as goofy as saying "A non-rich food can cause diarrhea" - do you see what I mean? Explain the facts of cause and effect, but just saying "it's rich" not only makes no sense - but it mis-educates everyone who reads it and believes that "rich" is a viable term to judge food - BEYOND TASTE. Just my two cents.

| I'm in the process of changing over to wellness. They were on eagle pack holistic select and it's great food. The only downfall is dried beet pulp. My shih poo has terrible reddish brown tears. So I'm changing to wellness simple solution duck and rice. The only difference is there is a little chicken meal in the new food. Otis has been more itchy lately. He was diagnosed with "hay fever' last year. So here's my predicament. I don't know if it's his allergies acting up because of the time of the year, or the new wellness food. I've heard that food allergies will not show up for 4 weeks or so. It's been about a week and they are still not on straight wellness. I change over slowly because of his belly. This is a good question, O.P.

| Thanks everyone! I am still watching Rusty and the food. LadysMom, can you detect dry eye just by looking at the eyes? Going blind is really scary.............

They have to test for dry eye with a test strip to see if he is producing tears. It's called the Schirmer tear test. Here's a picture: | |

I definitely would have him tested for this.
