Default Help!! My Puppy Won't Eat

Hello, We just got a 10 week old yorkie last Saturday and all was good. The place where we got him was no help on any onfo, even what he was eating. We had him eating Nutro wet food mixed with Nutro puppy dry food. Now he is not eating anything. I just went out and got him Alpo wet - beef, chicken and cheese but he is just licking it..Can anyone help? I also noticed he had a bit of diareah.

I would take him to the Vet first thing in the morning. Puppies that young, and small, can go down in a hurry. If he becomes listless this evening, take him to an emergency vet ASAP!!! If you have some NutriCal, rub a little bit on his gums. If not, you can use Karo syrup. Good luck!!

NutriCal is a MUST for young puppies trying to adapt to different diets and environments. Diarrhea is not uncommon with changes in diet, but watch for signs of blood or mucus which would indicate a more serious problem, in which case you should rush to the vet, and do save a stool sample in a plastic (not paper) bag to take with you.

My Tiki started out being a picky eater, and the breeder suggested adding a bit of cottage cheese to her kibble, which she loved, and also giving her a tiny bit of boiled chicken breast finely diced, in with the dry. Those things can also contribute to diarrhea in some cases, but it turned her into an eager eater.

He should have been fed the same food as where you got him, and gradually change to a new diet. When you change the food too fast they get diarrhea. Changing back and adding new foods may even upset his system more. Is it possible to ask them what they were feeding him? New puppies should see a vet as soon as possible. Remember they don't need very much food, but food should be available at all times.

Default Does he have any other odd behavior?

Nancy is right about mixing the food, and it's hard to believe that the previous owners don't know what food he was on. I'd say that's a red alert situation. I can't imagine buying a pup and having the owners tell me they didn't know what food they were giving them.

The breeder should have told you what they were feeding him. A definate change in diet will cause loose stools. When we got Toby we feed him on what we were feeding Alfie and his stools were always loose. So I phone the girl we bought him off to see what she was feeding him. I put Toby on that food and his stools got better. When we got Alfie the breeder was just feeing him with wet food mixed with a tiny bit of warm milk. I carried this on for a while, while gradually adding the dry food. Then of course Alfie turned out to be a picky eater in the end.

Good Luck.

Animal Smiley 036 puppy not eating

Stick with the Nutro puppy food - throw away the Alpo it's garbage - most food sold at the grocery store is not very good - especially for a growing puppy. Please take your puppy to the vet to have him checked out and for recommendations on his care and feeding. Don't wait too long puppies have little reserve and can die.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW REGARDING THE CARE OF YOUR NEW PUPPY
What is Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia, also known as Low Sugar, is a serious condition that can be very harmful to your new baby. A tiny baby doesn't eat much. If they did they wouldn't be tiny. So it is up to you to make sure that your new baby is eating. Low blood sugar often occurs in very small puppies and adult dogs. If your puppy is monitored carefully you can prevent this condition. The occurrence of these signs depends upon how low the blood sugar level has fallen and how far into an attack the puppy is. The further down the list the more serious the case.
What to Buy: Now that you own a tiny puppy always have Karo syrup, Nutrical, and honey available. Nutrical is a high sugar vitamin to supplement your puppy until it is 4 months old and then as is need during major changes or stressful situations such as; moving, vet visits, grooming, playing with the kids, etc. Nutrical or a product like it can be obtained in most pet stores. If you do not have Nutrical, half a teaspoon of honey, once or twice a day will go a long way in the prevention of hypoglycemia. Karo syrup works well because it is pure sugar in a liquid form, and could be purchased at your local super market. If Karo syrup is not available then use honey, Pancake syrup, or table sugar dissolved in water. Wherever you and your puppy go there should always be an emergency supply of sugar. If you plan on taking your puppy out with you, a syringe filled with Karo syrup should be at hand at all times, you can get syringes from your local pharmacy or vete rinarian office. Also, unflavored Pedialite to drink is a great way to prevent hypoglycemia.
Prevention of hypoglycemia: Tiny breeds have high metabolism and small stomach and need food and water available at all times. Please don't just set food out and assume your puppy is eating. Please watch your puppy and observe the amount eaten to be sure it meets the required daily amounts. Reduce and monitor ruff play time with children and other pets - your puppy is still a baby, and we know you want to show him/her off but the most important thing is that your puppy needs rest, so not too much excitement for at least 1 week until your puppy has adjusted; this again could stress out your puppy. Undisturbed sleeping time and sufficient rest is a must. Within a few weeks the attention span and waking periods of time of your little one will get longer and longer. Feel free to call us with any questions. We are always there to help.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia: LETHARGY (LACK OF ENERGY), WEAKNESS, UNBALANCED OR WOBBLY WALKING, EXCESSIVE HUNGER OR REFUSAL TO EAT, RESTLESSNESS, SHIVERING OR UNCONTROLLABLE TREMBLING, DISORIENTATION, STUPOR, CONVULSIONS, SEIZURES.

There is a sticky in Health & Diet Section with Premium Food for puppies.

Unhappy

I haven't been on at all yesterday or today - but just read your post and was curious to know how your puppy is doing? Did you take him to the vet? Is he eating anything yet?
