| scared to spay my baby My Roxi is 7 mos old and I know I should be thinking about spaying her. I kept thinking she would get bigger butt I think she has hit her max weight at just 2.5 pounds. I am scared to death to have her sedated. Has anyone had any experience with a small Yorkie (good or bad) |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Roxie is getting spayed Wednesday but she is 4 lbs. Pixie was spayed at 3 lbs and Cali at about 3 1/2 lbs. I had scheduled Roxie's spay for June 1 st but she went into heat at 8 months. I wish I had gotten her spayed before that. I know Michiko had Haruka spayed and she is that little and she did fine. I will keep your Roxi in my prayers.

| At 2.5 lbs I would be scared to and I would recommend a specialist if at all possible. Prayers for both you and your baby.

| No sweat She will be ok. I felt the same way. This is a procedure that vets have been doing for years. Everything will be ok |

| I had my girl's spayed at 3 lbs and I was like you, a nervous wreck!!! I waited until mine were 1 1/2 years and 3 years because friends of mine had lost their dogs to the anesthesia. I made sure that I picked a vet that had done many tiny dogs, in my case, she had spayed rats before! Then I made sure that they used Isoflorane gas, which is also used in the neonatal units on babies, so it is one of the safest. Then I also made sure that a vet or a vet tech was monitoring the anesthesia during the operation so that the vet could just focus on the spay. They both came through with flying colors but I was a basket case!! I am afraid to say that there is no test that they can take to be sure that your pup is not going to have an allergic reaction to the medication and that is what is so scary!! I wish you nothing but the best, what ever decision you make!!

| I would not do it. I haven't neutered my boy and he is only 4.6 lbs. Odds are everything will be ok. But there were cases, even here on this board where people lost their pets doing this. Its a chance you have to decide to take or not. |

| I feel for you. Sabrina was 4.3 pounds and I was scared and didn't have it done until she was 8 years old. By then they had a different kind of anethisesia to use that wasn't as dangerous to Yorkies. Someone here told me about it, but that was 4 years ago and I can't remember the name. She did really good and I'm so glad I did it. They found cancer in her uterine horns and got it before it got her. I put her in a shirt so she didn't bother the stitches, got a friend to come spend the weekend with me, cried like a baby for my baby, and she milked me for treats all the way home and most of the evening, then she never looked back. Ha - they have our number. My 2nd one, I had it done immediately, and she had no problem either. It's so much better for them if you aren't going to breed them, I'm just a believer. A pregnancy for it itsy's is so dangerous. Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

| Haruka was a little over 2 lb I think... My vet was confident.. and she felt that Haruka was healthy enough to get spayed... She also said that she spayed smaller animals many times before such as cats... So there was no problem ..... I know it is scary... but if you are scared, your girl will be scared too. Good luck!

| Hey girl! I know how your feeling! I was right there too just a few weeks ago... I got my Pixie spayed after months of stressing over it..she had her 1st season at about 9 months and she was spayed at 13 months...Pixie is a little under 3lbs. I found a good vet..checked out his website and was happy with what I saw then booked a consultation with him and took with me a list of questions I had written down..he answered every one and was very confident that she would be fine. I paid extra to have her bloods checked to make sure she was 100% healthy beforehand..apparently there was no need in a dog so young but I think it was well worth it for peace of mind. Pixie was very sleepy when I first brought her home..she managed to eat some food off my fingers that the vet had given me and drank some water which was a relief...she slept all night and she woke me early the next morning crying in her crate which I had brought into our room for the night..I took her in the garden and she peed...another sigh of relief!...within 24 hours she was almost back to normal and she didn't even so much as look at her incision...which was TINY! the vet did an excellent job...I was soooo happy and relieved it was all over! Pixie also had 7 baby teeth removed, microchip and her nails trimmed...best to get all this done in one go..the idea being that hopefully they will never have to be put under an anaesthetic again! I just found this past thread for you that I found really helpful at the time. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-spaying.html

| I definately understand why you would be extra worried about having your little one spayed given her small size. (As if having a larger one spayed isn't nerve wracking enough!) I wouldn't give up on her getting a bit bigger just yet though...most Yorkies are not done growing until they are around 1 year old. |
