| Gracies first visit to the Vet I am a little disappointed, Today was Gracie's first visit to the vet and it was awful. Gracie was a little nervous, so she was crying and the first thing that the vet did when she came into the room was grab her and squeeze her mouth closed and tell her to STOP!!! that made my baby even more nervous but she kept doing it over and over again until she realized that she was not going to stop crying. My poor baby was so scared. She asked me not to comfort her because that would be encouraging her to keep crying Then she started telling me that I had to maker her understand that she was a dog and that humans are the boss!! , so she had to listen and be nice to every human to make it easier for them to treat her when she gets sick. I asked her what was I suppose to do about the potty training, and she told me that I had to punish her, that I had to put her in her kennel and leave her there if she does not listen to me and every time I found some of her little accidents around the house to get Gracie show her what she did, tell her that she was a bad girl, flick her in her lower jaw and punish her. So tell me guys am I overreacting or are all vets like that? I did not like the way she treated Gracie I mean maybe if she was friendly towards Gracie would have felt more comfortable and maybe she would have stopped crying!!!!!! She was so rude! I think she was having a bad day and she took it out on Gracie. I also asked her about Gracie's weigh because she is 3 pounds and she is only 9 weeks old, and she told that I should not worry because Yorkies usually do not exceed 25 pounds. So what do you guys think? What should I do?

Get rid of the vet!! When I took Gucci to the vet the very first time, she was nervous too. The vet is one of the warmest, loving woman I ever met. Every advice she told you is not true.. I would definetly change vets, she sounds terrible. No compassion.....

Mistreating housebreaking errors is something I have learned never to do!! Our lillte babies, especially when they are brand new, don't understand they have done something wrong if you show them what they did. This vet must be super-old-school and off the rocker. Don't they make vets go to continuing ed classes? Anyway, my vet, and even other vets I've visited out of town, have never ever treated any of my animals this way. I have never heard of a vet suggesting popping their jaw for potty mistakes either -- how absurd!

| Absolutely change vets!!! How dare she treat your baby like that!!! I have 3 vets....they are all family in the same practice and they all are VERY gentle and loving with Dolce. I would have walked out too and told them where they could shove their practice if any of them tried that with my baby. I agree she may have been having a bad day but she should never have taken it out on your baby. Try out different vets till you find the one you AND Gracie like. Good luck with your search and I'm sure you will find the perfect vet!!!

That vet sounds horrible! I cannot ever imagine being told to "flick" my pet ever when a mistake was made. That is not a positive reinforcement whatsoever and I think the vet needs to be "flicked"... Run, run as fast as you can far away from that vet and find another, another who is caring.. It might take time for you baby to warm up to a good vet now as I am sure she will remember her experience with this horrible vet...Poor baby!! But she will learn to trust another vet I am sure. Give her lots of hugs, it was not her fault. And if anybody ever squeezed my dogs nose Id have a fit. Yorkie's have potty mistakes, especially when they are really young. It all takes time, be patient, give positive reinforcement and don't let your little one have free run of your home until your baby matures... Good luck finding a new vet!

Find another vet that you and your puppy can be comfortable with. If she is 3#'s at 9 weeks I'm guessing that she may possibly be around 8 or 9 pounds matured. Good luck with your new baby.

Find another vet...Yorkies "not" exceeding 25lbs? And punishing for accidents? What kind of vet is that? Always remember, u are the BOSS, u are paying the vet...so the least he can do is be polite!!!

I'm sure you've heard this before, but change vets! Even if you are the least bit uncomfortable with the vet, there's no reason to keep going to her. I didn't like the vet that Archie first had because I felt he didn't care enough. Our current vet doesn't touch Archie unless I allow her to. It's like if you went to a doctor and they just started touching you all over...it's icky!! Plus, they are not there to train your dog--training is YOUR preference, and they should not give you advice without asking you if they can give you their two cents, or unless you ask for advice. As for housebreaking, again, it's your preference. I'm not an advocate of crate training, and have been able to train Archie without a crate. I love Warren Eckstein, pet therapist, who has a great website (www.thepetshow.com). You might want to check it out if you have any training questions.

That vet really doesn't sound very pleasant, so if you can change vets, that'd be optimal (some smaller towns may not have such options unfortunately). If the vet has no respect for you or your Yorkie, it's just not worth going to, in my opinion.

"leave her there if she does not listen to me and every time I found some of her little accidents around the house to get Gracie show her what she did, tell her that she was a bad girl, flick her in her lower jaw and punish her." This is totally ridiculous!! They do NOT know what they did wrong unless you catch them in the act and never punish them like that!. I would definitely find another vet like everyone says. We live on a farm and raise longhorns and barbado sheep and are not the types to go nuts with dogs (really we aren't ) but I would never go back to a vet that treated ANY of my animals like that.

I am so upset to hear that both you and Gracie had such a horrible vet experience. To answer your question, no not all vets act that way. I used to work for one for 7 years and NEVER did anything like that EVER happen. If it was my dog, I would change immediately. You and Gracie both should feel comfortable and trusting in the vet's care. All of this transpired in your presence. What would happen if you weren't there? Don't mean to scare, just want to give you something to think about.
