| Evie's at the vet My poor baby girl is at the vet as I type getting spayed Oh I'm so worried!! She is such a little baby.. I hope she won't be in too much pain. Not only is she getting spayed, she's getting her four canines removed since the stubborn buggers never fell out.. AND she's getting microchipped.. oh! my baby!! Please everyone say a prayer for her that when she comes home she won't be in much pain.. hearing her cry will just break my heart. I do have a couple of questions... When will she be able to go outside?? I know for a couple days she won't be herself.. so I'm not even going to attempt it.. but do you guys just wait off the two weeks or do you take them out when they're themselves? Also, the vet said she HAS to wear her Elizabethan collar for the two week duration.. they said that if I take it off of her she won't want to have it put back on (ok neither would I).. but to me it just seems so cruel to keep a lamp shade on my baby's head for two whole weeks.. What should I do? Of course, I don't want her to pull the stiches out.. but when I'm watching her.. I don't see why she has to wear it

| Spay day is sooo miserable. She does NOT need to wear the e-collar for two weeks straight. It can come off when the animal is supervised. I prefer not using it and using a onesie instead. Some dogs still pick at their stitches through it though, so it doesn't work for everyone. It's worth a try. She probably won't have a bowel movement til a day or maybe even two after surgery. She will probably urinate tonight or tomorrow morning. If you mean when can you take her out to play, I wouldn't until the stitches come out. No jumping or running for 7-10 days...

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Awwwww, I know how nerve racking this is! I feel for you!!! I'll say a prayer all is well and she isn't in pain. They may even give you something for pain. Ellie May covered everything real good. Just keep her activities low. I would probably keep her inside for a day or so and then take her out but don't let her romp around. I'm sure she will bounce back real quick and be herself in no time. I'd try the onsie verses the cone. My Rogan had to wear a cone because he took out ALL his stitches the night of his knee surgery. it was AWEFUL. I went to the floor and almost passed out from what I saw! So its better to be safe than sorry! She will be fine!! Give her hugs from me! |

Ellie couldn't really stand til the morning after her spay (she had a liver biopsy too and was six-years-old), so the last thing on her mind was going outside. As long as your pup doesn't have an underlying medical condition that makes it dangerous to give pain meds, demand them if they don't want to prescribe anything. She will need them.

| aww..I know you're worried. I hope her spay goes very well and that she's back to herself in no time. The younger they are, the faster they recover so it shouldn't take her too long. Does she go outside to potty? You can take her outside to potty as soon as she is awake. I would just keep her on a leash so she can't run around though. She needs to rest and stay pretty still for the week after her spay so her incision has time to heal. I didn't use an e-collar at all. I used a newborn onsie on Lacy so she couldn't get to her stitches. That worked really well. I do want to emphasize keeping her still for at least a week. She'll probably feel fine in two or three days and will want to run around and play but keep her still for a week. Lacy was too active too soon and tore her internal stitches and had to be reopened and restitched...so that really taught me how important it is to make sure they stay still and heal the week after the surgery.

| Thanks guys for your thoughts.. the vet called not too long ago and said we can pick her up at 4:30.. they said she's out of surgery and doing great! what a relief! I went to Target and got her a couple of cute onsies... now my question is: which way does it go on?? lol.. If I put it the proper way... the cute words won't be visible (not that I'm worried about that) lol... Also, where do I cut the pee/poop hole?? and how big/little do I make it?? Any pictures would be GREATLY appreciated! OK now Jakub got me worried about another thing.. I never thought of asking them either... what's better stiches or staples?? ahhh I'm feeling dizzy from just the thought

| One more thing Marci.. I was just looking at the onsie... did you have in on Layla vice-versa since you put her tail through the snaps.. cause the way I was looking... there's no way her tail would reach if I had it on her the way a baby has

| I hope Evie is fine when you bring her home. Expect her to be really out of it tonight. She will most likely not eat. The most difficult thing will be keeping her calm, especially since she is used to playing with Kayah. Make sure she doesn't run or jump for at least a few days (which is pretty impossible). If you have a stroller, you might want to think about keeping her in that with it zipped up, so you can have her near you, yet not worry about her jumping. You'll have to see how she does with the onesie. It does on with the cute stuff on the back and that way the snaps are accessible to you as well. If her tail is prominent, you can just cut a small hole, but put it on her first so you know where to cut. If she still licks a lot with the onesie, the E-collar is probably better. Neither staples nor stitches are supposed to be licked while they are healing. If you keep her activity level low the first few days, she will probably be okay. Just check in the incision area for oozing, redness or swelling - all of which could mean infection. She shouldn't have any problem with the teeth or the microchip. I would also insist on pain meds as least for a couple days. I do not agree that letting them "feel the pain" means they will rest and sleep. Let us know how she does. Hugs to you all!!!!!

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Thanks for the PM, i hope that Evie is doing great now. You said she is out of surgery so i hope she recovers real good and fast. I will be reading this thread as well cause London is getting spayed tommorrow, and I have a ton of questions I'm so worried as you were today, is she home yet??

The insision is really smaller than I thought it would be.. I don't want to bother her right now.. but if I had to guess I'd say MAYBE about five staples (yes she got staples).. They shaved her front paws for the IVs.. omg does she look pitiful.. lol I put the onsie on her the "proper" way.. so next time she's up.. I'll have to flip it around.. I couldn't believe though.. when they brought her out to me.. she got all excited (although still out of it) and when I took her in my arms.. she tried crawling up to my shoulder
