No prob. Yep they def. do look nasty, even to me who is not a vegetarian but i used to be for a year when i was 15. I do think about being one again, i know i can def. give up pork which i like never eat but i eat chicken soup and stuff like that so its hard but i hate the thought that animals are being killed for me to eat, but w.e. thats a whole issue right there. But i do think about it. And the bones look very gross but they love it lol But then again London is a nasty little girl

Have you just recently started using Petzlife? If so, maybe it will start to help soon. I think I read somewhere on here that some people's dogs don't have ANY teeth and they manage to get along okay. So, maybe, in the worst case, if she lost her teeth (and had antibiotics, etc.) she could still eat and be okay. I would be worried sick about putting her under considering her past experience. I'd rather her have no teeth and be alive.

My girls love to chew on small all natural organic small bully sticks..Thank god, they are chewers! And they are all on raw diet and i brush their teeth everyday so, so far no problem..i know what you mean about finding a good vet! I am just like you..super picky!

oh, Dina! I know you are scared for little Pia. All my girls had tartar build up on their teeth...especially Kissy as she is 7 years old. At their last visit, all of them have super white sparkly teeth now! My vet was even surprised when he looked in all their mouths to suggest a cleaning. He said they didn't need it...even Kissy!! The only thing different was the Dental Care liquid that i keep in their water and the dental treats from LA. They have been on the liquid Dental Care for about a year and i was amazed at how clean and fresh their breath is now. It goes a LONG way as i use one of those reservoir type water bowls and it only takes 1 capful per 24 oz. water. It is tasteless to them so they dont' even know it is in their water. I don't have to brush their teeth this way either.
I was really dreading that i might have to get Kissy's teeth cleaned but now i don't!!
It isn't a quick fix as it takes awhile to get all the build up off of there but at least you wouldn't have to have her out for anything since she is so tiny.
Hope that help GF!!
Give your babies some kisses from me and the girls!!
XOXOXOX

What exactly went wrong during surgery?
Were there any other drugs used besides Iso?

Iso (or Sevoflurane) is usually the drug of choice, even for small Yorkies.
If it will only take a few minutes, maybe something like Propofol could be used?

At Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Michigan there is a specialist who specializes in animal anesthesiology. This is very uncommon. Because of the severity of your dog's situation, your vet probably should talk to someone like this.

When they put her under, I would suggest they apply OraVet and continue it at home.

Love Prayers for Pia

Oh sweetie, bless your heart! I am so sorry you have been through so much with little Pia. You are such a good Mommy! My babies are young and I know I will be in your shoes soon thinking about getting teeth cleaned, neutering Paxton and pulling baby teeth...the only thing that comes to mind are posters about a vaccine you can give to your dog for plaque prevention. Don't quote me on this one but I am almost sure. I know how you feel about your little one being so sick or almost loosing her. Cricket jumped off my bed when she was 7months old, she broke her radius and ulna completely in half. She had to have a plate and metal screws in her tiny leg...she is only 4lbs. on her fattest days. I about had a hear attack with the stress of trying to save her leg. Hopefully some Yt'rs that live in your area can give you the heads up on some great vets. Just trust your gut, us Moms know what is best for our babies. I will pray for you and your little girl! Take care and try not to stress!

Dina,
we had that same problem with my sister's chi and we ended up finding a lady who does anesthesia free cleaning. It takes longer, but she wraps them up in a blanket like a burrito and cuddles them while she cleans. There might be some one in your town who does this or someone will come to your house. Poor Pia I hope you can find someone who can do it without putting her under.

Dina~ can you ask around your area and find people who have had their dog's teeth cleaned without the anesthesia? There's several people in our area who do it and I know that one of them at least, is EXCELLENT and so gentle with little dogs. She even can identify any particular problems they might have (Max had a loose tooth and she pointed it out and said not to worry about it b/c it would fall out on its own, which it did)....if you can find a good one, your problems would be solved! And then, maybe using some of the Petzlife( or the product up above that sounds amazing) in between? Usually grooming salons or the vets will have a person who comes once a month or so to do teeth cleaning without anesthesia, so just ask everyone you can; my neighbor had so many little dogs that she had the girl come to her house to do it, so maybe you could work something out with someone you feel comfortable with (and get good reviews on). Good luck!

The breeder that we got Abby from gave us a "hoof", it is a bone that is shaped just like a hoof and both the girls love it! Abby chewed on it when she weighed 1.5 lbs, so I'm sure Pia could chew on it. She told me we could get them at Rural King, PetSmart and online at UPCO pet supplies, Revival Pet Supplies or Jeffers Pet Supplies. They last forever!

I also remember the breeder telling me about her vet and she liked how he put her dogs under. He put them in a glass tank, like an aquarium type thing and gave them a little gas, he could wake them up immediately by removing the gas? At least I think that's what she said. I can ask her if you like. It's been a few months ago since she told me. I think I'm going to take Abby to her vet to have her spayed instead of mine, because mine likes to keep them overnight and I'm unsure of the anesthesia. I'm sure my vet won't be happy with me but,....oh well.

I wish you the best of luck with Princess Pia

Default Thanks everyone : )

Hi guys I know I didn't reply to everyone but I wanted to say thanks for all of the help. You guys are all so wonderful. I am NOT putting Pia under at this time. I've decided to try a few things mentioned and hopefully they will help. Thank you so much Linda for letting me know about that product. As you know, we ordered it last night. It sounds wonderful!! Thanks Sarah for the help with the bones. I actually found a place about an hour away and I'm going there Friday to buy some. I actually sent the people an email with the picture attached and they replied this morning. They seem so nice and also gave me info. about a few other things. When I'm there Friday I'm going to ask them if they recommend any vets in their area. Thanks Jodie for suggesting the gauze. I did this last night and it worked so much better. I highly suggest that everyone start using this when brushing with petzlife or anything else.

Also, a few of you mentioned about cleaning and not being put under. I never even knew something like this was possible. This is why I love YT!! I'm asking everyone, LOL!! I really love the idea of this but I wouldn't envy the person that would have to work on Pia. She hates her mouth touched and I can only imagine the fight she would put up.

Thanks again everyone. If I didn't mention you please don't take it personal. I've read all of your replies but don't have time right now to reply to each one. I have hope that all of this new stuff will help Pia. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much.

Hugs,
Dina & P.P.

Just saw this thread. I certainly know where you're coming from. I went to a vet vet an hour away to have Feather spayed and her 9 baby teeth pulled. He had all the newest equipment. They did a full blood panel first ( not just the in office thing) they monitored her heart, used a bearhugger (warmer) had an extra nurse etc. for which I paid dearly but it was worth it to me. When I had my last little one I put off doing her teeth and she got an abcess and had to go in as an emergency and then I didn't have a chance to find the vet I wanted to do it so it's best to find someone and get it done. Sorry so long. They used Isoflurane and propfol to intubate her. The only other anesthesia I know of that's safe is Sevofluranne(sp?) There are some vets who will clean them without putting them under completely but I haven't found one around here. Good luck. Just remember in my opinion all the brushing in the world won't clean thier teeth once they are dirty. I brush like a mad woman and use petzlife and although it does slow down the tartar buildup it still happens

I just realized that you live in PA. If you don't mind could you let me know where you took Feather? Making the drive is no problem. Thanks

Hi Jeanne, I've had petzlife for awhile now, but I needed to be using it much more (shame on me). I'm really cracking down now and hoping all the new effort helps. I feel like you do. I'd rather have her with no teeth and be alive. This is just so stressful but I ordered a few new things and I'm hoping they help.
