I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Eye Problem - Corneal Ulcer This afternoon Joey wasn't acting himself, he usually lies beside me while I'm on the computer or in my lap, but he went to another room. His daddy was home today, so I thought maybe he just wanted to be with him, but when I checked I found him alone on our bed. I noticed his eye was squinting, and when I opened it further it looked red. I called the animal hospital, since today is Saturday, to see what they would recommend; and they suggested that I bring him over immediately. It really didn't look that bad, and he wasn't squinting all of the time, just once in a while. I took him to the hospital and thought it was just allergies because my eyes have been driving me nuts lately. I was stunned to find out that he had scratched his cornea and has what is called a corneal ulcer. You can't see it with the naked eye, and the doctor has to put a stain on the eye in order to detect it. The doctor doesn't know what caused it; apparently any trauma including scratches from plants or carpet, and even rubbing his own eye can cause this. I'm posting this so that others will realize that even a little squinting is in indication of a serious eye problem that if not treated promptly can lead to infection. Treatment includes a cream and a cone to prevent further irritation. Apparently, it can take a month to clear up with weekly vet check-ups. Has anyone else had this problem?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Way back in the 70's my first Yorkie, Karma tried to get under our chain link fence and ulcerated his cornea. Same thing, they gave me a cream and drops to numb the eye. His wa so bad that the vet said if it didn't get better in 2 weeks I would have to take him to the University of Illinois specialist, but thankfully he was fine after a couple of weeks. Hope you baby feels better soon. I had a scratched cornea from a feather pillow and bot did that hurt, especially in the sunlight but ina couple of days it was so much better.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Poor Joey! Give him some hugs! Well, oddly - Marcel's eyes have been bugging him - so I took him in and he has conjunctivitis - but the vet had to do a stain to determine whether or not she could give an ointment that contained a steroid. After the stain - she discovered a tiny little scratch on his cornea - and she said she's been seeing a ton of them lately - she thinks bc of all the dry wind lately here in AZ and flying pieces of debris/cactus (like you said). Luckily, Marcel's was so tiny that it didn't warrant anything additional, unlike Joey's. I've had a corneal scratch myself - and holy heck - they hurt unlike anything - so kudos to you for posting about this.

| I have not had problems with Sassy regarding this but I have had corneal tissue worn off from improperly fitted contact lenses. It is extremely painful. Extremely. Glad your little one is alright! |

| Poor Lady has dry eye because of her diabetes and she has a problem with corneal ulcers. In fact, she's got one now. I think she got it scratching at her eye. Is he feeling better with the medication? Lady starts to feel better right away. |

| I haven't had this problem with any of my yorkies, "knock on wood" but have had it happen to one of my horses, probably from a tree branch. My vet did a stain and ointment and stitched his eyelid closed for a week. He was a one eyed bandit. Didn't slow him down abit. It should heal just fine. |

| Yes, I experienced this with Simon back in September. I had to give him the eye drops throughout the day for a week then every other day for another 2 weeks but it cleared up just fine and he was back to normal I still have no idea how it happened. Good Luck to your little guy~ |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Thanks for all the replies. I have been worried sick about this. Last night his eye looked so much worse than before we ever took him to the hospital, completely closed, but this morning he looked pretty good again so I guess the cream is working. I was worried about how he would react to the cone since he has to sleep in it, and amazingly he's adjusted to it very well. I guess the trick here is to get the correct size because the first one the tech brought out was huge and I think it would have been more difficult for him to get use to. They wanted to give him Torbutrol for pain, but he had a bad reaction to that after neuter surgery (each dose made him more hyper) so they decided not to give him anything. I sure hope he isn't in pain. His appetite is fine. Ann, does the vet suggest keeping them in if it's windy? This is such a beautiful time of year, but the "breeze" can come out of nowhere, and I've never thought about it being able to hurt their eyes so easily. Maybe some little goggles? Here are a couple of cone-head pictures, it's the eye on the left.
