Puppy shots and one year boosters are usually considered necessary.
The timing of the shots after that are in question.

Dog vaccines/Minimum duration of immunity

· Canine rabies - 3 years

· Canine parainfluenza - 3 years

· Canine distemper (Onderstepoort strain) - 5 years

· Canine distemper (Rockborn strain) - 7 years

· Canine adenovirus (kennel cough) - 7 years

· Canine parvovirus - 7 years

If you read here, the distemper shots are good for approx 7 years. That is one of the "booster" shots.

Here is what my vet and a lot of other vets think:

The first year you need to get the rabies and the booster. The second year get the rabies and the booster. Then the fifth year we get the rabies and the booster and so on.....because here the rabies is due every three years, so that is when we get the boosters also.

I give all my dog's their puppy shots and then annual booster the next year and then NO MORE vaccines for the rest of their lives, except rabies, which is required by law every 3 years. My vet told me that that is all they need, all the rest is for the vet to make money, the dog doesn't need them and can hurt them. If my vet was telling me that they need those vaccines every year, I would get a new vet!! They are just trying to take your money and are not very informed about vaccines.

My vet does every 3 years, and they're staggered so she gets one a year. Rabies last year, Parvo this year, Distemper next year, and then it starts over.

This subject gets my blood going almost like no other, but I'll try to remain calm, lol.

The AAHA released their revised vaccine recommendations in 2003 - FIVE years ago (and then again in 2006) - and still, here we are - dealing with vets who want to over-vaccinate our pets, to the detriment of our pets' health.

PLEASE educate yourselves and BOOKMARK THIS PAGE - come back to it for updates. In my opinion, any vet who maintains that yearly vaccination is the gold standard is either 100% about the money or 0% about staying current in animal health.

This is what my vet confirmed with me at Angel's booster time. But, only after I brought it up and brought the article from Dr. Dodds with me. My vet works in a practice of 7 vets (she doesn't own the clinic) and told me their protocol is to continue with yearly vaccinations (except rabies which is 3 years after the booster) and not to discuss this unless the customer brings it up. Since I brought it up, she was able to share her thoughts and concerns which is our pets are highly overvaccinated. She also does not recommend anything other than the rabies vaccine for the rest of their lives - particularly because of their tiny size. This is what she does her her own dogs and they aren't toy breeds.

This subject also gets my blood boiling too! My vet still wants to give boosters yearly and the rabies every three years. I won't let him give the boosters, so he tries to put a guilt trip on me.

I was really concerned about vaccinations after reading everything that has been said here on YT, but I was really happy that our vet brought it up before I did. Ella will be getting the standard shots (spaced out--no more than one shot at a time) for the first year, then her rabies will go to 3 years. She'll get one or two more rounds of boosters, then the vet will check her blood (I think she called it tithers??) to see the antibody level she has. If she still has the necessary antibodies, then no more shots!

It's true. Our vet started doing shots every three years. She said it's better and she doesn't believe in over vaccination.

i get peanuts every year . he gets rabies every 3 and he gets his bordetella every 6 months just because he is outside a lot and goes to doggy day care and grooming but some of those diseaes are very contagious so you have to becareful

Oh this article gets me thinking!!! I need to check and make sure Chloe isn't "over-dose"! However, since I board her a lot, the pethotel requires Kennel cough every 6 months...do you guys think it is too much?? Thanks for bringing this up!!!
