| Food Allergies?? I have an 8 year old yorkie that licks his paws constantly. He also has really pink skin, and has some thinning hair. The vet thinks it could be a food allergy. I currently feed him purina EN, which is a prescrption food for dogs with stomach problems. I think he needs to be switched to a low allergy can food. Can someone reccomend one I could buy. |

California Natural is okay but their company is in a lawsuit...don't know if that matters to you. Evangers makes some excellent canned foods and there might be a few low allergen ones. Natural Balance (although they were involved in the recall last year) has some good allergy formulas. Some of these canned foods (not Evangers) are probably made at Menu Foods if that is a concern for you... Canned foods can be richer or higher in fat and protein than kibble, so some dogs don't tolerate it very well.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What are the "stomach problems" that the EN is for? EllieMay mentioned good ones above. There is also Orijen 6-Fish (fish based kibbles can be amazing for allergy dogs/digestive issue dogs), Nature's Variety Instinct wouldn't contain many allergens. Might also benefit from some fish oil supplementation - just a thought.

| I am wondering about the thinning hair. If he isn't scratching and that is what is making it thin, then there might be a deeper problem.

| I know Fromm's now offers a grain free which I think would be suitable for an allergy suffering pup!

| Yes, this is the same dog, we still have not gotten to the bottom of his actual problem. We had some more labs done last monday. Alk phos showed 309 , alt 184. Everything else in normal range. The vet wanted to do an extensive thyroid panel from univ of michigan, of which the results confused us even more. It showed T 9(normal 15-67), TT3 09.(1.0-2.5), Free t4 6(8-26), tsh 11(0-37), and negative thyroglobulin antibody. The vet was totally unsure as to what this all meant. Some tests represent hypothyroid, but then the tsh is normal. She didnt feel his other labs were indicitive of cushings at this point and suggested a trial of levothyroxine at a dose of 0.1mg/day. She also mentioned the thyroid could be causing the allergy problems, and that we might want to try a low allergy food. He was on the EN because he seemed to be getting gassy from his usual dry dog food, because he wont chew it very well. I am so thankful for you all, I get very valuable info from everyone. Please keep it coming. T |

| With the ALT being that high and him being a Yorkie, have you considered a ble acid test?

| no, they have not really suggested the bile acid test, but i am going to look into it and request it. What disease goes along with abnormal bile acid tests? |

| anything that effects liver function (especially liver shunt and MVD). Liver shunt isn't probable at his age. If you do it make sure to not give vaccines for a month or two before and dont give other meds (unless required) for one or two weeks before (like heartworm preventative). Meds skew the results.
