| Question about vaccinations my 1 year old yorkie is due for her next rabies shot, etc. the vet i took her to for vaccinations when i got her is a little too expensive for my budget right now. So, for $200 less i am taking her to the local SPCA for the low cost vaccination clinic. the only problem is that they give a different set of vaccinations (besides the rabies) than what she would get if i took her to her regular vet? any advice??? will this hurt her? she is required to have all of her shots because she attends a doggy daycare sometimes and also obedience and agility classes where the shots are required to keep attending. otherwise, i wouldn't vaccinate her at all except for the rabies. |

| I would give the rabies shot on a different day than the other shot (at least a week or two apart). The first year booster for DHPP is important but I would not get it yearly after that. I would sooner not put a dog in daycare than overvaccinate... The rabies you have to follow the law. Will your dog be examined at the SPCA clinic before receiving vaccines? What is the difference in the SPCA shot and your vet's shot?

| Yeah, what she ^ said...she doesn't need any more than one more 1 year shot and a rabies...otherwise she'll just be overvaccinated. That can actually make them MORE sick... |

| Yes, you need to stagger the shots, not give them all together. Even if you don't vaccinate every year, dogs should have an annual physical. She'll also need a heartworm check. |

| I don't fully understand your dilemma. How are the vaccines that the SPCA are wanting to administer your pup different than the ones at your local current/normal vet? Different manufacturer? Different combo in one vial (meaning a 3 in 1 instead of let's say a 4 in 1)? By 6 (usually 4 months) months of age, many states, if not all require a dog have Parvo; Distemper; Bordetella; Rabies vaccines administered to them in order to be boarded, for example. Each establishment can require different vaccines been given in order to offer you service. I hope this helps some. Get educated about the different manufacturers of vaccines and what each does specifically to your dogs system, that would be my advice. There are pros and cons to vaccinating your pup. BANNED! | You should stay current on the kennel cough vacine if you put your baby in day care around other dogs, but this vaccine can be tricky as it can also give your dog the kennel cough your trying to vaccinate against. The rest do sound okay doing thru the aspca imo. |

| no lepto I would not give lepto unless it is very prevelent in your area. They can have serious reactions with this shot |

| I would call the vet and ask them how much it is for the shots..and this time I would get your dog the 3 year rabi shot..that's what mine are all getting the next time around. $200 alone sounds like too much for shots..The first visit for Gingers shots was $58 and that was also for the check up, the 2nd and 3rd time only cost me $18 total.. |

| I would not give the rabies and combo on the same day. I don't give bordetella but you really don't have a choice, so can't help you there. I would absolutely NOT go with the DHLPP. If you HAVE to give lepto (which is somewhat risky in Yorkies) then I would give it separately and on a different day than all other shots. No lepto vaccine protects against all strains, there is a high likelihood of reaction to it and it would have to be boosted every 6-9 months because that is how long it lasts... That being said, lepto is a bit of a problem in the east and it can be deadly. This decision takes a lot of research. Lyme disease vaccine is usually not recommend. It has the potential to cause kidney damage and is not a really safe vaccine (along with all the other ones). Lyme's is usually very treatable with antibiotics, especially if you catch it early. Just because Lymes is in your area doesn't mean there is a high disease rate and disease and infection are two different things. There is a thread about Lyme's vaccines on YT that you could search out. It has a lot of info in it. The DA2PP (if it stands for distemper, adenovirus, parovirus and parainfluenza) should be fine. If the SPCA doesn't examine before injection, I wouldn't use them. Do they have meds there and an er area in case there is a problem?

It's important to remember for those of you whose dogs have already had a lepto shot with no problem that rarely do they react to the first shot. It's usually the second or even third shot that will cause the reaction. | |

| ok, I just got back from the SPCA low-cost clinic. they were very nice and seemed to know their stuff. it was also clean and looked as high tech as my usual vet. I got the physical exam, fecal exam, heartworm/lyme/etc. bloodwork, and rabies vacc. They recommended that I wait a week or 2 before getting the other vaccinations done- whatever I choose to get. The whole visit was $85. Also, the rabies does not need to get done again until 2011. I will continue researching and asking questions to see if I will get more vaccinations. I am a first time pet owner, so this is all new to me. I grew up with dogs, but it was always my parents making these decisions + money was never an issue for them. overall, I just want what's best for my baby, Kenna. Also, I called the training club where I take her for obedience and agility classes and it turns out that the only vaccination required is rabies, so they don't require more. It's the daycare/boarding place that requires all of the others. Sorry for rambling. Thanks for all of your comments and advice! |

| I think it is important that she gets distemper, parvo and hepatitis because she hasn't gotten them other than puppy shots... I would do it this year and either wait three years or do titers or work out another schedule...

| In response to the suggestion to get a 3 year rabies shot, unfortunately, some areas still require the rabies shot yearly....even if you use a 3-year vaccine. Crazy. But best to check local regs. |

The one year and three year shots are the exact same thing with different labels. Every three years is clearly enough. I like Michigan.
